Alzheimer's walk

The Second Annual Alzheimer's Family Fun Festival and Memory Walk is planned for Oct. 9 at Mauch Chunk Lake Park in Carbon County. As part of this year's festivities, a Wall of Memories pictorial display will feature photos of local people suffering with Alzheimer's disease.To have a loved one included in the display, mail photos to 38 Chestnut Hill, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229. At this time, there are no provisions to have photos returned, so pease don't send original photos. For more information on the event, contact Kathy Ruff at (570) 645-3059.Alzheimer's was the seventh leading cause of death in 2006, and the fifth leading cause of death in people ages 65 and older.Senior newsThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 82 members in attendance. One new member, Georgette Evans, was welcomed to the group. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided readings.Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Our Friend." Reports were provided by secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld, vice president Doris Brobst and treasurer Dolores Walck. Shirley Mooney was welcomed back and Melody Weicker, Jean Behr and Jean Yanick were added to the sick list.Guest speaker Janene Holter, of the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office, provided information on ways to prevent identity theft.The next meeting will be held Aug. 12 at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club and will include the annual picnic. Lunch will be served at noon.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join the senior's group.St. Jerome'sThe St. Jerome's Parish Finance Committee will meet Aug. 17, at 7 p.m.An altar server meeting will be held Aug. 19, at 6 p.m., in the church. A follow up session for new altar servers will be held Aug. 26 at 6 p.m.St. John's LutheranThe Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.Activities for next week will include: Monday, Worship and Music Committee meeting at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Cemetery Committee will meet at 7 p.m.; Thursday, assembly of the Messenger at 1 p.m.
