A 32-year-old Tamaqua native was involved in a dramatic heroic rescue of the crew of a crashed Army helicopter last week in the rugged terrain of Pikes Peak, Colo. Warrant Officer Michael Chickilly, a Huey helicopter pilot for the 571st Medical Detachment at Fort Carson, was part of the rescue team that climbed more than 1,500 feet down Pikes Peak, hauling medical equipment to administer first aid to an Army pilot and helicopter crewman whose craft crashed into the rugged hillside and burst into flames. Both crewmen were hauled to safety and their lives were saved.
