Woman, 21, injured in Mantzville

A 21-year old woman was injured Monday morning when involved in a one car crash in the village of Mantzville, West Penn Township. The crash occurred at 10:30 a.m. as the victim was traveling north on St. Peters Road just off Mantzville Road. For some unknown reason she lost control swerving to the right going down an embankment impacting with and snapping off a utility pole. The wires and transformer on the pole dropped onto the car with the woman trapped inside. Rescuers from the West Penn Fire Co. No. 1 were at first apprehensive to perform the rescue for fear of the power lines still being charged. The woman was extricated from the wreckage and treated by members of the Penn Mahoning ambulance and Lehighton paramedics. She was then transported to the Carbon County airport where an awaiting PennStar helicopter flew her to the St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill. Township police are investating the incident. An unknown number of residents were left without power.
