Gas scare in Jim Thorpe

There were some anxious moments in Jim Thorpe Tuesday morning when officials were forced to evacuate several families from their homes after a strong smell of gas was detected near the intersection of Seventh and Center streets. Police and fire officials were called to the scene just after 10 a.m. and quickly sealed off the area, shutting down the 600 block of Center street to traffic and pulling several residents from their homes. A short time later representatives of UGI determined the gas was coming from a broken line possibly feeding 632 Center St. Jim Thorpe firefighters monitored the gas levels in the homes and later determined it was safe for the residents to return. No injuries were reported in the incident.
