Blasting away on turnpike

Work continues on replacing two sets of bridges along the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. One bridge spans the Lehigh River and the other the Parryville Dam in Carbon County, southeast of Lehighton. Thursday afternoon traffic was stopped in both directions as workers set off two explosive charges just west of the southbound lanes. The charges dropped a portion of a rock wall which must be removed to make room for the new roadway. Northbound traffic was stopped south of the tunnel while southbound traffic was stopped a mile north of the Mahoning Interchange.
