Results of DUI checkpoints set

The North Central Pa. Regional Sobriety Checkpoint DUI Taskforce and Expanded DUI/Underage Drinking Enforcement Program has released the following statistics from sobriety checkpoints held in Schuylkill County this past weekend.

On July 9, a checkpoint was set up in New Castle Township. Officers contacted a total of 322 vehicles. Of the 33 motorists detained, nine operators were tested, with two adults and one juvenile arrested for DUI. Officers also made five underage drinking arrests, issued 16 traffic citations, made four criminal arrests and issued 18 warnings. Five county law enforcement agencies were represented by eight officers.Also on July 9, officers set up a checkpoint in West Mahanoy Township where 179 vehicles were contacted. Of the 23 that were detained, two operators were tested and arrested for DUI. Officers also issued 19 traffic and six seat belt citations and issued 10 warnings.Roving patrols and sobriety checkpoints will also be conducted through July 18 on state routes 61, 183, 901, 209, 309, 443, 895, 125, 25, 924 and 54.Travelers are reminded to dial 911 if they suspect a drunk driver.To report underage drinking, call 1-888-UNDER21.The sobriety checkpoints and Roving DUI patrols are funded through the state Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
