Two accidents within 18 hours on two separate Monroe County highways resulted in two deaths and numerous injuries.
The first happened on Route 209 at Shafer's Schoolhouse road in Stroud Township in which a tractor trailer rammed into cars parked at a stop light.The rig then burst into flames.In that accident, which happened at about 8 p.m. Thursday, the driver of the tractor-trailer was charged with vehicular homicide.The deceased was identified as Susan Erben of New York City.Charged was William E. Blackburn, 52, of Rochester Hill, Minn. He was not injured. Blackburn was arraigned before District Judge Thomas Shiffer of Stroud Township and placed in Monroe County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail.Officials said they were informed that Blackburn had been driving erratically just prior to the crash.According to police, Erben was in a Mini Cooper, which was rear-ended by the tractor trailer. The Mini Cooper than struck a Corvette driven by Enrique Guttin of Wilmington, Del. The rig also struck a Hyundai Sante Fe driven by Sheila Chelnik of East Stroudsburg.Route 209 in the area of the crash was closed until Friday afternoon because of the accident.The second crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Friday on Route 33 between the Lehighton and Saylorsburg exits. At the time, police were in the process of reopening Route 209 from the previous accident.Police said the chain reaction crash involved three vehicles. They included a utility bucket truck, minivan, and SUV.One person was reportedly killed.No other details, including the identity of the accident victim, were available.
