Franklin supervisors give $30,000 to the fire company
Franklin Township supervisors opened their meeting on Tuesday night on a generous note.
They presented a check of $30,000 to Bruce Wolfe, fire chief of the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Co. He said that fire company appreciated the funds which will be used to pay half of the truck payment."Without this money, we wouldn't be able to do it," said Wolfe.In 2006, supervisors promised the fire company it would begin receiving $30,000 a year from the supervisors beginning in 2007, so this is the fourth time the township has presented that donation sum to the fire company.The township also pays for workmen's comp, insurances and fuel for the fire company.The fire company dedicated its 2008 KME Rescue Pumper, which had a price tag of $438,000, in July 2008, The fire company fleet also includes a1991 E-One Engine pumper, 1983 Mack tanker and 1986 Chevrolet brush truck.Supervisors also approved entering into a local share grant contract with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for $76,650 in grant funds for phase two of the Court Street retaining wall.The board tabled two agenda items after a discussion with property owners. Gregory and Louise Sander who want to see a home built on their property for their daughter, but the property is in the process of plan approval. The Sanders had the option to rescind their subdivision plans which will allow immediate building of one home on the parcel, but would require them to resubmit the subdivision plans if they want to develop more of the property.After discussion, the Sanders opted to get legal advice from the township solicitor Tom Nanovic before making any decisions.The board approved paying $790 for a change order and another $36,000 to complete the open flow meter project that measures Franklin Township's sewage flow into the Central Carbon Municipal Authority wastewater treatment plant.The board granted extensions to Rock Street Land Development Corp. for a 90-day extension and a one-year extension to Lighthouse Baptist Church to complete the paving of their parking lot.In December 2009, supervisors had approved the Rock Street Land Development Plans contingent upon meeting township engineering requirements. Allentown businessman Victor L. Frye, developer of the Rock Street project, has proposed a 25-acre members only campground on the former Otto Campgrounds at 1500 Rock St. in Franklin Township. The first phase of the resort includes 56 rental cottage units, a recreational center, lodge and social hall, five swimming pools, a waterfall, clubhouse and restaurant, tennis courts, hiking and biking trails and other recreational activities.Supervisors issued a reminder to township residents that they must obtain driveway permits before construction or paving. There is no charge for the permit.Sandra Gaumer, secretary, explained that the permit application allows for the township to inspect the area to see if the project was done correctly.Also Gaumer noted that there will be a change in garbage collection for the July 4 holiday. Trash collection will be made on Tuesday, July 6, instead of Monday, July 5.Supervisors also gave the Franklin Township Fire Police permission to assist at the July 4 parade in Lehighton.The board also voted to close the tap in fee account at Jim Thorpe National Bank and to transfer funds to the sewer operating fund checking account at Jim Thorpe National Bank.
