Marian's 2010 award recipients named

The 88 members of Marian Catholic High School's class of 2010 accumulated an impressive number of awards and scholarships this year.

The following students were named to the Principal's Academic Honor Roll: Julie Baran, Katherine Dodson, Katherine Ferrello, Thomas Gottstein, Kristen Halenar, Rebecca Hartz, Michael Mulligan, Katie Owens, Devin Parambo, and Theresa Patten.Katherine Dodson, Eric Faust, Alexander Garber, Micahel Mulligan, Brian P'Donnell, David Paul, and Tyler Zimmerman were recognized for attaining perfect attendance for the 2009-2010 school year. Michael Mulligan attained perfect attendance for all four of his years at Marian.The graduation awards were bestowed as follows.Theresa Patten - an award presented by the Men of Marian to the valedictorian, Air Products & Chemicals Award for excellence in science and math, the Archbishop Francis J. Furey Award to the student who exhibits qualities of service and character, and the Victoria "Vicky" Shirvinski Award to a student who displays a caring attitude and strives for academic excellence.Julia Baran - an award presented by the Men of Marian to the salutatorian, Air Products and Chemicals Award for excellence in science and math, the Edward and Alice McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence, positive Christian values, and a genuine concern and compassion for others.Devin Parambo - the Bishop's Catholic Scholar Award, Air Products and Chemicals Award for excellence in science and math, the Schuylkill County Interscholastic Athletic Association Award for excellence in academics and athletics, the Marian Faculty and Friends Spaghetti Dinner Committee Award for volunteerism to Marian, the Coles Family Award for excellence in Spanish, in memory of Sister Amelia, former director of studies at Marian, for the student who had the highest average in honors Spanish for four years.Chelsea Koerbler - the Class of 1987 Award in Memory of Maria McArdle, the Ellen Marie Brylewski Award for outstanding work in the field of scienceMichael Mulligan - the Bishop's Catholic Scholar Award, the Ernest Scheller III Memorial Scholarship to a student enrolled in a four year college based on academic merit, demonstrated leadership, civic and community service, the Schuykill County Municipal Authority Scholarship to a student who advances environmental stewardship and water conservation, Air Products and Chemicals Award for excellence in science and math, the John Philip Sousa Ralph J. Brodt, Jr. Award, given by the Diocese of Allentown to a senior in the Diocese for excellence in vocal music, The Tamaqua Elks No. 592 Award, the Schuylkill County Conservation District Award to a student who displays a strong interest in conservation of our natural resources.Jung Uhn Kim - the Helen E. Hawrylo Memorial Award for outstanding work in accountingMichael Legath - the Dr. Richard E. Miller award to a student pursuing a career in the medical fieldKatherine Dodson - Air Products and Chemicals Award for excellence in science and math, the Alpha Theta Masters Beta Sigma Phi of Tamaqua Award for excellence in science, the Allentown Diocese Holy Name Award for excellence in theology for four years.Tyler Zimmerman - the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce Charles "Sam" Ghares Memorial Award for excellence in business subjects, the West Penn Lioness Club Award to a student from the West Penn Area who displayed outstanding academic achievement.Dylan Rush - the Dr. Richard E. Miller Award to a well-rounded student pursuing higher education, the Thomas and Bridget Cannariato Jr. Memorial Award to a student for theology.Kayla Stanek - the Panther Valley Women's Club Award to a Panther Valley student who exhibits outstanding academic achievement, leadership, loyalty, and service to Marian and who will pursue a career in education, the Edward and Alice McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence, positive Christian values and a genuine concern and compassion for others.Scott Nietz - the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce John J. Earley Award to a student pursuing a degree in law or liberal arts, the Frank De Febo Memorial Award for a senior for their dedication to Marian who was a member of the football team, an award given to a graduate who is active in the Parish of St. Katharine Drexel.Andrew Sherkness, Jr. - the Frank Burda Memorial Award to a well-rounded student who has stong family values, shows kindness to others and exhibits qualities of leadership, determination and commitment to excellence and loyalty to his family and school.Nicholas Tristani - the DAR Bronze Good Citizenship Medal and certificate from the Valley Forge Chapter of the PA Society Sons of the American Revolution, the Frank J. and Sophia A. Raynock Memorial Scholarship to a student who has demonstrated loyalty, cooperation, service, and genuine concern and compassion for others, the Brian Van Horn Memorial Scholarship given in memory of Brian Van Horn, a member of the Class of 1989 of Marian High School.Dana Dever - the McAdoo Lions Club award to the McAdoo student with the highest general average, the Lisa Spokas Memorial Award for the highest average in English.Kyle Thomas - an award given by Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Nurses Guild to a graduate enrolled in a college program to study professional nursing.Emily Schilling - the Frank DeFebo Memorial Award to a senior member of the girls' track team, the Edward and Alice McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence, positive Christian values, and a genuine concern and compassion for others, the Joseph F. Delpero Memorial Award to a graduate of Our Lady of the Angels Academy who is involved in his or her community.Chelsea Sheehan - the Mary R. Engler Memorial Award for a student from Jim Thorpe who displays positive characteristics of scholarship and will be attending college, the Jim Thorpe Lioness Club Award to a female student from Jim Thorpe Area District who is in the top 20% of her class, has given community service, and will continue her education, the George P. Thomas Memorial Scholarship to a student from Jim Thorpe who will be pursuing a career in the medical field, the Josephine Remmel Scholarship Award to the student from Jim Thorpe meriting the highest general average, the Senator David G. Argall Award for good citizenship.Lauren Pupko - the Yellow Rose Award presented by the Lambda Nu Chapter of Mahanoy City to the Mahanoy Area girl who demonstrates interest in service and cultural activities, the Mahanoy City Chamber of commerce award to the Mahanoy Area student with the highest general average, the Mahanoy Area Democratic Women's Club Award, the Tamaqua Elks #592 award, the Three Tamaqua Chapters of Beta Sigma Phi Award for a student who shows a spirit for the qualities of life, learning, and friendship, and the St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees Academic Scholarship Award to a student in the top 20 percent of the class who is enrolled in an accredited 4 year college in the field of health care.Marina Webb - an award given to a graduate who is active in the Parish of St. Katharine of Drexel, the Thomas Skrabak Memorial Award to a student who exemplifies the qualities of leadership, scholarship, service, and enthusiastic concern for others.Jillan Nilsson - the West End Fire and Rescue Award to a student from Mahanoy City who exhibits the qualities of volunteerism and community involvement, the Mahanoy City Women's Club Award for service, the Claire N. Pfieffer Memorial Award to a graduate exhibiting selfless love and concern for people of all ages and who is pursuing a career in nursing, the Josephine O'Callaghan scholarship award to a student who is pursuing a career in the field of nursing.Matthew Yaich - the Senator David G. Argall Award for good citizenship.Rebecca Hartz - The Tamaqua Rotary Club Award to the student from the Tamaqua Area School District who best exemplifies truth, fairness, goodwill, and concern for others, the Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. award for excellence in science and math, the Edward and Alice McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence, positive Christian values and a genuine concern and compassion for others.Samantha Heine - the Josephine O'Callaghan Scholarship Award to a student who is pursuing a career in the field of nursing.Angela Pavalko - the Mahanoy Area Democratic Women's Club Award, the Jack and Ann Cannon Memorial Award to a Marian student who leads by example, shows compassion for others, and has shown dedicated service to Marian Catholic High School.Alexander Garber - the Schuylkill County Medical Society Award in memory of Helen Meikrantz, to a student pursuing a medical career, the Ladies Auxiliary Award to the student with the highest academic average from SS. Peter and Paul Parish in Tamaqua, the Marian Faculty and Friends Spaghetti Dinner Committee Award for volunteerism to Marian High School, the St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital Medical Staff Academic Scholarship Award to a student in the top 25 percent of the class and pursuing a career in science or health care in an accredited college or university.Patrick Leitzel - the Michael S. Award for excellence in science and math, the Alice L. Schilling Memorial Award to a student who exhibits a caring attitude and strives for excellence, an award given by the foreign language department to a student who excelled in French.Justin Huegel - the Knights of Columbus Schuylkill Assembly 0923 Award for service, the Jack and Ann Cannon Memorial Award to a Marian student who leads by example, shows compassion for others, and has shown dedicated service to Marian Catholic High School.Sarah Connely - an award given by Brad Shanfelt in memory of Tracy McElmoyle (Class of 1993).Bruce Balliet - the Knights of Columbus Schuylkill Assembly 0923 Award for service.Kristen Halenar - the Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. Award for excellence in science and math, the Josephine O'Callaghan Scholarship Award to a student who is pursuing a career in the field of nursing, the Edward and Alice McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence, positive Christian values, and a genuine concern and compassion for others.Thomas Gottstein - the Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. award for excellence in science and math.Michele Fetco - an award given in memory of Vic and Anna Merinsky, an award given by the Action Youth Group to a graduating senior who has shown leadership, dedication, and Christian values, the St. Vincent De Paul Society Award to a graduate who reflects the spirit of St. Vincent De Paul in giving time and talent in service of the needy without seeking notoriety and reward.Matthew Baxter - an award given by Brad Shanfelt in memory of Larry Sabol (Class of 1993).Erin Rehatchek - the Schuylkill County Council of the American Legion Auxiliary Award to a student who will be entering military service.Eric Faust - an award for service from the Mahanoy City Women's Club, the "We Are" award to a student who will attend Penn State.Victoria Smith - an award presented by the Nesquehoning Lions Club to the graduate with the highest academics.James O'Connor - the Knights of Columbus, James A. Hogan Council 2580 of Frackville Award for a Frackville student with the excellence in theology.David Paul - the Edward Gieniec, Class of 1998, Memorial Ward to a well-rounded student who is furthering his education and who has strong family values and has shown kindness to others, who will pursue education at the college level.The graduates have also received a total of $2,547,503.00 in scholarships, grants and awards, of which they have accepted $1,643,409.00. 65 students (74% of the class) will attend four year colleges. 12 students (14%) will attend community colleges. One student will attend nursing school. Four (4.5%) students will attend technical/trade schools. Four (4.5%) students will go into military service. One student will go into a business school. One student is undecided.
