Fitzgerald leads PV to title game

What a game Meagan Fitzgerald had yesterday.

The Pleasant Valley senior pitcher struck out 13, gave up only two hits, and walked just one batter in leading the Bears to a 6-0 win over East Stroudsburg South in a Mountain Valley Conference semifinal game."Our pitching is going to keep us in every game," said Pleasant Valley head coach Steve Caffrey, showing the confidence he has in his pitching staff and especially Fitzgerald. He noted that it was the second highest strike-out tally for the slender brunette, who upped her record for the season to 14-3. Fitzgerald struck out 15 in a previous game. The win puts PV in the conference championship game tomorrow night against the winner of the Stroudsburg-Pocono Mountain North game, which was played yesterday in Stroudsburg.Giving Fitzgerald a boost was a potent, three-run homer by Megan Hardy. The blast came with two outs in the third. Hardy sent the ball cruising over the center field fence."Megan's been swinging the bat pretty good for us," said Caffrey, noting she has at least one other homer this year. The only walk given up by Fitzgerald was the first batter she faced in the game, Nicole Fryer. She then whiffed the next three batters, sending all three down swinging and leaving Fryer stranded on first.East Stroudsburg never posed a threat. The only batter to make it to second base for East Stroudsburg was Hannah Bergen, who managed a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt in the fifth. She got picked-off when she tried to steal third.Caffrey said he anticipates a tougher game Friday night. For Pleasant Valley (18-3, 10-3 MVC), it was the third time this year they topped East Stroudsburg, and the second time they won by shutout.
