Lehighton takes over top position

The Carbon County Senior Games has helped keep area seniors young at heart for the last 22 years.

Each year, the games have grown, making this year's competition one of the largest, with over 200 men and women from five county senior centers coming out to throw, shoot, swim, dance, and putt their way into the winner's circle.One week of competition has been completed and the two-time defending champs, the Lehighton senior team, has taken back first place from the Jim Thorpe seniors, who led the pack for the first three days of competition. But, it's still anyone's tournament with 10 events left. This week's competition include, Monday: bowling and ping pong; Tuesday: the Philip Steigerwalt Memorial Walk, softball throw, horseshoes, and bocci; and Wednesday: Bingo, pinochle and rummy, and dancing.The overall standings to date are Lehighton in first with a score of 321; Jim Thorpe in a close second with 305 points; Panther Valley in third with 94 points; Palmerton in fourth with 38 points; and Weatherly in fifth with 18 points.Thursday afternoon and Friday's events included swimming and miniature golf.
