Tamaqua Patrolman Thomas Rodgers made good use of his February Taser training on Tuesday night, deploying one of the department's Tasers in a successful effort to control a belligerent subject.

Rodgers and Tamaqua Sgt. Richard Weaver were dispatched to the Five Points Pub at 10:45 p.m. to deal with a reported unwanted person.When they arrived, they found Kareem J.W. Walker, 24, of 18 Mauch Chunk St., Tamaqua, struggling with a group of men in an apparent effort to enter the establishment.Walker was wearing boxer shorts and a pair of socks, nothing else. Walker was cursing, using obscene language and threatening the men.Sgt. Weaver approached Walker and told him he was under arrest. Walker shoved the sergeant, then began running south on Mauch Chunk Street, turning the corner to run north of Railroad, ignoring the officers' shouts to stop.Officer Rodgers drew his Taser pistol and shouted multiple warnings to Walker.When the suspect refused to stop, Rodgers engaged the pistol, shooting two small probes into the middle of Walker's back. The suspect stopped immediately and dropped to the ground.He was taken into custody, refused medical treatment, then lodged in a cell. A records check turned up an active, outstanding warrant from Carbon County. He was later transferred into the custody of the county sheriff's department and lodged in the Carbon County Prison.After interviewing witnesses, officers learned Walker had been engaged in an argument with a female patron in the bar.At one point, he spilled beer on the woman. She, in turn, poured her glass of beer on Walker. When he took off his clothes and continued to cause a disturbance, he was ejected from the bar, only to try and force his way back inside.Tamaqua Police will charge him with resisting arrest, escaping/fleeing to elude officers, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
