Suspicious fire at Verizon Phone Company

A suspicious fire caused serious damage to the Verizon Phone Company building along Madison Street in the New Tripoli, Lynn Township. The fire was discovered shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived on scene they found a fire which started in the rear of the structure. A manager of Verizon said he believes the fire to be arson being started with a large coil of cable which was lying against the rear of the building. He stated he did not know if the fire was intentionally set of if someone was attempting to burn off the insulation of the cable for the metal wire. He said the perpetrator caused somewhere between $20,000 to $40,000 of damage for $20 worth of metal. The telephone equipment inside the structure did not sustain any damage and telephone service to the area was not affected.
