Bears walk away with finals' losses

Jordan Toledo learned a lesson and Jacob Chamberlain got his feet wet. Both Pleasant Valley wrestlers found themselves in the finals of a long weekend at the District 11 3A wrestling tournament at Liberty, but both came away short in the first leg of a three-week postseason wrestling marathon.

Toledo and Chamberlain lost both of their finals' bouts Sunday night, but each came away with lessons learned, at least that's what head coach and former state champion Mark Getz hopes came from weekend."They didn't lose a state title, so the dream is still there," said Getz about Toledo and Chamberlain's losses and prospects for the next two weeks of possible competition. "From personal experience, I lost the district title my senior year and went on to win the next two [regionals and states] tournaments."Hopefully I can relate that to them. Starting Monday, it's a whole new week and tournament."Getz won the 135-pound state title as a senior at Nazareth in 1994 and knows that there's still plenty of running left in the season. He also felt Easton's Mitchell Minotti ran away from Toledo in the 130-pound championship.Minotti, a sophomore, scored a 3-2 victory over the Bears' senior, scoring a first period take down to lead his way to victory. Minotti did serve up a stalling point Toledo late in the third, but it was too little too late for Toledo."We want to wrestle in the middle of the mat and he [Minotti] ran most of the match," said Getz. "He [Minotti] did a great job countering Jordan, but he never presented himself in the middle of the mat. We chased and chased and that was frustrating to Jordan."Getz knows that finding an ample plan to counter Minotti's tactics will be vital this weekend when the Northeast Regional tournament takes place at Freedom. The two will likely find themselves back in the finals and Toledo knows something has to change."I feel like I really didn't find a way to win," said Toledo. "I wrestled his bout and didn't push my offense enough. This weekend is a fresh start and losing in the finals only motivates me more to win regionals."Chamberlain (135) also felt the sting of losing to a Red Rover, falling behind 4-1 in the first period en route to an 8-2 defeat to Joey Rizzolino."Jake was pretty nervous all day and you could tell that he has never been at this level before," said Getz. "I think towards the middle of the match he started to calm down, but this was a good experience for him. Hopefully, he can take this weekend as a positive and use it as a teaching tool heading into next week."Pleasant Valley finished in seventh place overall with 109 points as they advanced six wrestlers to regionals including: Mike Pokrinchak (125), fourth-place; Sean Bianco (103), sixth-place; Ernest Klingel (112), sixth-place and Alex Yanovich (140), sixth-place.Team Standings1.
