A Jim Thorpe man, who in 1999 was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, is again in trouble with the law.

Paul G. Herman, 50, of South Street, Wednesday waived a preliminary hearing on charges of former convict not to own a firearm, simple assault, and harassment.The hearing was scheduled before District Judge Edward Lewis of Jim Thorpe. Herman waived the charges for the next term of Carbon County Court.In 1999, Herman pleaded guilty to the shooting death of James Logan of Penn Forest Township on Aug. 15, 1997. The voluntary manslaughter plea means a person killed in the mistaken belief he needed to protect himself.The latest charge stems from a domestic situation which occurred at 7:13 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 3. It is alleged he choked a female and then kicked her in the stomach.The arresting police officer, Patrolman John Donato, said in the affidavit that it was brought to his attention that Herman had weapons in the residence. Retrieved were two firearms, a loaded Savage, pump action, 12 gauge shotgun and a Marlin Glenfield .22 caliber rifle.Donato said in the affidavit that Herman admitted to borrowing the firearms "for the last few years from two different friends for hunting and home defense."
