The Summit Hill Recreation Commission is an organization which has been envied by many other communities. The commission hosts the annual Memorial Day Weekend Stay-At-Home celebration which attracts large crowds, has an annual spectacular fireworks display and live bands, but mostly it raises money for recreation and the fire department.

The commission stages Christmas on the Hill during which youngsters have a free lunch with Santa and even get small gifts.The Rec Commission hosts an Easter on the Hill egg hunt every spring.According to Joe Weber, president of Summit Hill Borough Council, the commission is down to just two active members: Monica Marshall and Larry Marek.Suzanne Milkowich, who has been very active for a number of years and who has been instrumental in the commission's growth the past few years, said she will continue to serve. She just hasn't notified the council, yet.Two members who have been dedicated to the group have moved out of the community, leaving a big void.Milkowich agrees with Weber that unless new volunteer members come forth soon, the Stay-at-Home Weekend even might have to be scrapped. Planning the event is time consuming. It also takes bodies to collect tickets at the event, operate the stands, oversee the festival, and clean-up the grounds. This is all done by volunteers.The Recreation Commission is no different from many organizations in crying for more volunteer help. But the Commission has made such an impact in the town. It has created incredible traditions not only for its own residents but for people who come from miles around to attend the Stay-At-Home festival.Also, the commission's main purpose is to create recreation in the community. In recent years it has bought wonderful equipment for the playgrounds, opened the impressive Bill Black Playground for small children, operates a basketball league, and runs the refreshment stand at various Ginder Field events.It will be a big loss for Summit Hill borough if enough volunteers can't be found to keep the Recreation Commission operating.Anyone interested in joining the commission should apply at the borough hall.You would be volunteering for the community, but more important you would be doing something for the town's youth by agreeing to serve.Hopefully enough caring people step forth to keep the heart of the commission beating.By Ron Gowerrgower@tnonline.com
