Tamaqua, Jim Thorpe score girls soccer wins

Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe came away with girls soccer wins over the weekend.

In other action, the Pleasant Valley and Tamaqua boys soccer teams continued winning ways.



The Lady Raiders had a tough test with Nativity and came away with a hard-fought 4-2 win.

Kailee Rottet scored two goals for the Raiders, while teammates Kayla Hope and Lauren Mateyak added one goal apiece in the win.

Nikki Farr and Kiely Chaklos scored the goals for the visitors.

Tamaqua outshot Nativity 15-6 in the win, improving its record to 13-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the league.

No. Schuylkill-Jim Thorpe

The Olympians scored twice in each half to hand the Spartans a 4-1 Schuylkill League loss.

Kristin Lawrence scored both first half goals, while Chelsea Smelas and Caitlin Liscinski added the others after intermission. Lawrence, Erica Smith and Cat Condly had the assists.

Condly and Smelas shared time in goal for Jim Thorpe making four and six saves respectively. The Eagles outshot the Olympians 12-11.


Jim Thorpe-Williams Valley

After trailing 3-2 at the break, Jim Thorpe was upended in the second half, being outscored 5-0 and lost to Williams Valley, 8-2.

Zach Ashley and TJ Leiter both scored two goals in the contest to help their team to the win. Teammates Colin Harrison, Matt Underkoffler and Ben Rautzahn all added one goal each

For Jim Thorpe, Matt Rich and Kyle Lawrence scored goals to keep things interesting.

The Olympians actually outshot Williams Valley 22-19 with goalkeeper Justin Kaminski stopping 15 shots.

Freedom-Pleasant Valley

Freedom and Pleasant Valley were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, but PV's Ricky Forte took a Tyler Michlik feed and scored to provide his team with the win in overtime, 2-1.

Ali Eser scored unassisted for Freedom.

Malik Krcic had an unassisted goal for the Bears.

Robbie Edwards stopped five shots in the PV goal. Pleasant Valley improved to 15-1 on the season, while remaining undefeated at 10-0 in the MVC.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

The Blue Raiders scored early and often, recording three first-half goals on their way to a 3-1 win over host Pine Grove.

Lance Williams, Gonzalo Cascante and Caleb Leibenguth all scored goals for the winners, with teammate Zack Lakitsky stopping seven PG shots in goal for the win.

Schwalm scored the lone goal for the Cardinals in a game that saw both teams record eight shots.


Nazareth-Pleasant Valley

The Lady Blue Eagles defeated Pleasant Valley in a non-league girls volleyball match up, 25-17, 25-17, 25-9.

For the Bears, Kayla Dorney had seven kills and six digs. Brittni Cumberland contributed 13 assists, three kills and two aces and Breanna Joseph had four blocks and two kills.


Lehighton-Wilson West Lawn

The Indians stepped out of Mountain Valley Conference play and dropped a 1-0 decision to Wilson West Lawn on Saturday.

No other information was available.

Northwestern-Pen Argyl

The Tigers scored a pair of goals in the first half, but it wasn't enough as the Green Knights scored a 3-2 Colonial League win.

Tiffany Gumina and Sara Jones scored the goals for Northwestern. Laura Cinelli scored all three goals to record a hat trick for the Green Knights.

Both teams had 14 shots on goal.
