DUI charges are pending against woman who caused Rt 443 crash

State police at the Lehighton barracks said drunk driving charges are pending against a Tamaqua woman whose 1998 Plymouth Voyager slammed into the rear of a pickup truck on Thursday at 8:07 a.m. on Route 443 in Mahoning Township.

The accident happened at the intersection with Semmel's Hill Road, near the TIMES NEWS property. Two photographs and preliminary details about the crash appeared in Thursday's paper.Police said Suzanne L. Hile, 53, was driving the van eastbound when it failed to stop for a vehicle that was stopped in front of it. Police said Keith A. Smith, 45, also of Tamaqua, was operating a 1989 Chevrolet S10 at the time. He too was eastbound on Rt. 443, but was stopped to make a left turn into the TIMES NEWS parking lot.Police said the van struck the rear bumper of the S10, which traveled 250 feet northeast before coming to rest on the front lawn of the newspaper property. The van continued about 534 feet eastbound and came to rest along the eastbound shoulder.Police said both drivers suffered minor injuries and were transported to the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton, by the Lehighton EMS corps.Police said Hile will be charged with traffic violations (driving too fast for conditions) relating to the crash. The DUI charges are pending the results of a blood test administered to the woman at the hospital.Both the van and the pickup truck were towed from the scene by Blocker Brothers Body Shop and Collision Center, Lehighton.
