Council members added, new president elected

The new Jim Thorpe Borough Council met for the first time during a special reorganization meeting at Memorial Park Hall on Monday evening to swear in new council members and to elect leaders and support personnel for the year ahead.

This year, two new council members join the team, Kyle Scheckler and Joanne Klitsch, who has served on the council before. Returning to council seats this year are members Gregory Strubinger, W. Todd Mason, Justin Yaich, Joseph Marzen, and John McGuire.Jim Thorpe Mayor Michael Sofranko opened the meeting, asking for nominations for the council president and vice-president positions. Yaich and Strubinger were both nominated for the position of president. Yaich was elected. Strubinger and former council president McGuire were both nominated for vice-president. McGuire was elected.All existing borough officials were retained for another year, including James Nanovic as solicitor, Louise McClafferty as borough secretary, Maria Sebelin as borough treasurer, Joseph Scatz as police chief and Entech Engineering as borough engineer.In addition, James Trainer was retained as street supervisor, Edward Gula as sewer supervisor, Vince Yaich as water supervisor, Eugene Mulligan as building/zoning officer and Curtis Jackson was appointed to the vacancy board for a one year term.Ammon Hontz was again retained as the borough health agent, William Brior as the sewage and well enforcement officer and Michael Huber was appointed to the zoning hearing board for a 3-year term.
