Drug testing policy considered

A drug and alcohol testing policy could eventually be implemented in the Palmerton Area School District.

Superintendent Carol Boyce informed the school board on Tuesday that the district may consider an extracurricular drug policy.

Boyce said the district will inquire with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association to review samples of similar policies statewide.

"We also need to find a source of funding," Boyce said. "It was not a budgeted item."

Resident Bill Strauch, who last month suggested the district create such a policy, again urged the board in that direction.

"It's very important," Strauch said. "Can you talk to other schools?

Last month, Tamaqua Area School District implemented a new, mandatory drug and alcohol testing policy for students in grades 7-12 who will participate in the schools' co-curricular activities or seek parking privileges.

Also on Tuesday, the board approved, on an 8-1 vote, with director Tina Snyder opposed, the following extracurricular positions as per the negotiated contract for the 2010-11 school year:

Pamela Andrews, computer club, Palmer/Parkside, $712, and yearbook adviser, $712; Deanna Iles and Lyn Sutton, environmental club, Palmer/Parkside, $540.50; Kathryn Hassler, safety patrol, Palmer/Parkside, $712; Roberta Beckley and Pamela Storm, Sixth Sense, Palmer/Parkside, $362; Beckley and Storm, student council advisers, Palmer/Parkside, $356; William Acierno, computer coach, Palmer/Parkside, $1,652; Kerry Palumbo, art club adviser, high school, $1,738; Robert Falkenstein, Avenger adviser, $3,553, Class of 2014, Freshman Class, $1,263, and yearbook adviser, $3,553.

Snyder said the reason she voted against the moves was because she previously asked for a job description for the positions as a means of "accountability." She said her votes had nothing to do with the students.

The board also approved, on an 8-1 vote, with Snyder opposed: Kathy Englert, student council co-coordinator, $450.50; Chris Kery, student council co-coordinator, $450.50; Patricia Boyd, Academic Challenge Eighth, $724; Kevin Kolodziejski, newspaper, $1,176; Brad Landis, National Junior Honor Society, $904; Carole Burkhardt, chorus, $1,405; Kolodziejski, yearbook co-coordinator, $888; and Amy Morgan, yearbook co-coordinator, $888.

In other business, the board:

• Approved as extra curricular advisers and curriculum coordinators at the junior high school for the 2010-11 school year:
