Judge Addy dies

Carbon County Judge David W. Addy died this morning in Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, where he had been a patient since Monday. He last worked on Friday, Dec. 4, and had been in ill health for more than a year.

Prior to the weekly Carbon County Commissioners meeting today, Court Administrator Roberta Brewster announced to the group of the judge's passing."The county was notified of the judge's passing not long after reporting for work today," said Commissioners Chairman William O'Gurek.Elected as judge in Nov. 2005 and sworn in on Jan. 4, 2006, Addy was known for his compassion, intelligence and sharp wit. The county's 17th judge, Addy, 52, was elected to the judge's seat that opened after the retirement of Senior Judge Richard Webb.Judge Roger N. Nanovic was sworn into Webb's seat, opening the spot for Addy.He graduated summa cum laude from Temple University, and went on to earn his law degree at Villanova University School of Law in 1986.That same year, Addy came to Carbon County from Abington, Montgomery County, to work as a law clerk for the former Judge John P. Lavelle. He became an assistant district attorney in 1989.Addy, of Lehighton, worked with the county's Children and Youth Services Agency to improve the lives of children and worked with the county's Drug Task Force. He was recognized by the state Office of the Attorney General for his service to drug law enforcement. He served as a leader of the Carbon County Law Explorer's Post and as Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 82 in Lehighton.He is survived by his wife, Carol, three sons and two stepchildren.Prior to the commissioners' meeting, county officials observed a moment of silence in his honor.
