Tamaqua police find vehicle on fire following morning crash

About 2:20 a.m. today Tamaqua police and emergency crews responded to a reported car fire on Tuscarora Road located on the bottom of Hometown hill off of SR309 north in Tamaqua.

When they arrived they found a dark blue Ford Explorer hidden near the woods next to a large building with smoke coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was upright.Upon further investigation they noticed that the vehicle was recently involved in an accident. Glass was showered all over the road leading to the vehicle. The roof was partially caved in, possibly from a roll-over. Deep tire tracks from the vehicle tire rims were dug into the dirt leading to the vehicle. A road sign was also knocked down. There was smoke still coming from the engine compartment, so firefighters ripped the hood off to douse it. The vehicle had most of its windows broken or missing. The license plate was also missing. All the tires were deflated or torn off. Burn marks could be seen on the branches hanging directly above the vehicle. A neighbor said she heard a bang, looked outside, saw someone running around his vehicle, and then ran away. Even though the vehicle seemed to have flipped on its roof, the Ford Explorer was upright when found. No one seems to be sure if the vehicle coasted, was driven, or was pushed to its final resting place. Police are still investigating. Anyone with any information concerning this incident is asked to Tamaqua police.
