Franklin Township Lions Club opens the 2009 Festival of Lights on Friday.

This show, in its 10th year, is held at the Phifer Ice Dam Park, 880 Main Rd., Lehighton.Dates and times for the Festival of Lights are 5:15-9 p.m. Nov. 27, 28 and 29, and Dec. 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28.The community park takes on a magical glow this time of year with more than 400,000 lights set up in a variety of displays throughout the grounds.Visitors walk through a winter wonderland that brings the Christmas holidays alive for young and old alike.In the acres of lights, visitors will see the new animated Christmas tree, a light show synchronized to music, a penguin village, sea monster, dolphins jumping, and many displays featuring the Jolly Old Elf himself."We're taking advantage of the brilliance of the LED lights to 'green up' the displays," said Tom Zellner, organizer of the event. "We've tested the lights and we're ready to open.Zellner said that LED lights use much less electricity and offer a much brighter light display.After seeing the displays, visitors can stop by the Christmas Café to warm up with a cup of cocoa or a tasty treat.Golf cart rides are available for the physically impaired.If assistance is needed, call the Lions Club at (610) 377-7703 and leave a message so that arrangements can be made.Santa arrives nightly before Christmas.He will have gifts for the little ones.Entrance fees are $4 for adults and $1 for children under age 12. Children up to age 6 are free.Proceeds from the festival benefit the sight impaired, Franklin Kids Creation, a handicapped accessible playground, Phifer Ice Dam Park, local fire company, Carbon County Fair, Franklin Township youth recreation, fire victims, community projects, scholarships for deserving students, Bucks for Bucks literacy program and the aluminum can recycling program.
