Recount of judge race set; other vote tallies certified

Recount for the office of Judge of the Pennsylvania Superior Court will be held in Schuylkill County at the office of the election bureau located in Pottsville on Wednesday, Nov. 18, beginning at 9 a.m. Election Diretor Frannie Brennan said her staff will make the recount and the county is expected to receive $22,000 for its effort.

Pennsylvania's Secretary of State ordered a statewide recount Friday of ballots cast in the general election held Tuesday, Nov. 3, for four open seats on the state Superior Court. The recount is expected to cost $1.3 million and it will be the first recount triggered by law in Pennsylvania history. A 2004 state law provides for an automatic recount whenever competing canididates' vote totals are separated by 0.5 percent of the votes cast or less.In the November election Judge Anne Lazarus, of Philadelphia, appeared to garner enough votes to claim the fourth seat but three candidates are trailing her were all within that 0.5 margin. Four were to be elected. Two of the candidates previously waived their right to a recount but the third, Atty. Temp Smith, of Pittsburgh, declined so the recount was ordered for all nine candidates on the ballot.The official vote the nine candidates received in Schuylkill County were as follows:Robert J. Colville, Democratic, 11,578; Kevin Francis McCarthy, Democratic, 13,078; Anne E. Lazarus, Democratic, 11,705; Teresa Sarmina, Democratic, 10,494; Judy Olson, Republican, 16,726; Sallie Mundy, Republican, 16,213; Temp Smith, 12,258; Paula Ott, Republican, 14,444; Marakay J. Rogers, Libertarian, 2,899.There were 42 write-in votes for Superior Court.Receiving two votes each were Charles Hepler, Ed Paulis and Wendy Matter and one vote each, Adam Savage, Alexis Ort; Amanda Labarbera, Boris Poppoff, Chadd Stednitz, Charles Chiaro, Charles Herring, Dale Reepe, Dennis Sninsky, Doris Chizmar, Garth Felter, George Leiby, George Watkins, Glenn Salata, Grant Imahara, Grego Soga, Guy Fawkes, J. Groody previously was appointed sheriff to fill a vacancy and won his first four year term.Joseph Devine, who lost to Groody in the primaries, received 24 write-in votes. Receiving one each were Alvin Heim, Charles Haldeman, David Yelito, Garth Felter, George Leiby, Jack Cesareo, John Boardman, Larry E. Moyer, Lia M. Sweet, Mike Tobin II, Nick Gallagher, Steven Lutz, Cheryl Davidson and Tommy L. Brennan.In the election of a district attorney, Incumbent James P. Goodman officially received 17,918 votes to win re-election over Atty. Christine A. Holman who received 14,552 votes.There were 17 write-ins. Karen Byrnes Noon, Frank Cori, Joseph Nahas and Lynn Sweet each received two votes. Receiving one each were, Charles Herring, Darrell Harris, Dennis Conti, Garth Felter, John Liptok, John R. Miller Jr., John T. Herber III, Michael O'Pake, Nathan G. Bevan, Steve Krolick, Steven Lutz, Willliam Reiley and David Plachko.In the election of two jury commissioners, one from each party, the two incumbents, Edward M. Eddie Kleha, Democratic, received 12,602 votes and Peggy E. Zimmerman, Republican, 18,467 votes.There were 19 write-ins each receiving one vote, John Liptok, Larry E. Moyer, Nick Gallagher, Robert Lewis, Ron Rador, Scott Kline, Tara Welsh, Teressa Stefenson, Wayne Schiff and John Zurat.District justicesDavid E. Plachko was re-elected district justice for Magisterial District 21-3-01, which covers Port Carbon area. He officially received 3,796 votes. He won in the primary nominations on the Democratic and Republican ballot.There were 10 write-ins each receiving one vote, Leonard Gravish, Maureen Wallace, Ana Litwak, Bernie Lubinsky, James Hale, John Cappella, LInda Garraway, Nick Panko, Stephen Bobella and Trahn Thompson.Anthony J. Kilker, who had been appointed to fill a vacancy in Magisterial District 21-3-05, Shenandoah area, won his first full term. He officially received 3,278 votes.There were nine write-in votes,Doug Litwhiler, three votes, and all others received one each, Bill Moyer, Etto5re Dicasimirro, Jemes Bolton, Jim Grady, John McFarland, Nick Gallagher, Stefe Krolick and John Catizone.
