Pupils in the Palmerton Area School District have gained tips to improve their reading skills.

A recent Raising Readers Workshop at S.S. Palmer Elementary School helped promote literacy at home and in school. It was open to pupils who are a part of the district's Federal Title I Reading Program, as well as future kindergarten students in Headstart and preschool.As part of the workshop, parents were able to learn new ideas and strategies that they can use at home with their children to further literacy growth.The pupils and their parents rotated between three classrooms through a series of workshops that demonstrated activities, as well as hands-on opportunities.In one workshop, S.S. Palmer reading specialists Katherine Malay and Jessica Silfies had the students create family journals."You should make it your own and take ownership of the project," Malay said. "Our intention is to get you up and walking."Parent Armitta Thomas said her third grade son, Colton, and second grade son, Bryce, seemed to enjoy themselves."I think it helps cheer them," Thomas said. "It helps them with learning writing and getting themselves more into it."The Parkside Education Center and S.S. Palmer reading teams were in charge of the presentation.
