Man detained after arrest at checkpoint

A Greek man found himself incarcerated in the Schuylkill County prison Saturday after being detained at a DUI Checkpoint held in Tamaqua.

Officers set up the checkpoint late Friday night in the vicinity of the All American Jeep dealership on SR309N. A man driving a gray Ford sedan had problems producing the required paperwork. He told officers he was Losif I. Halkiadakis, 55, of Hazleton, producing a Virginia registration for the vehicle.A records check revealed there were no records found for the car. Also, Halkiadakis had no driver's license from Pennsylvania and no proof of insurance. A driver's license issued to him in New Jersey was suspended in 1993. Officers determined Halkiadakis was a resident of Greece. He was also tested for DUI.Due to the circumstances officers arraigned the man before duty District Judge Stephen Bayer of Tamaqua on the traffic violations. Fines totaled $834.50. Unable to pay the fines, and determined as a flight risk, Halkiadakis was incarcerated.
