Three-year-old Kayleigh Adams, wearing a red, plastic, toy fire helmet, giggled as she was lifted onto the front of the ladder truck of the Palmerton Fire Department by Mike Williams, a fireman wearing his full gear.

Another child was thrilled when handed a red frisbee, one of numerous handouts given away Tuesday night during a Fire Prevention Week program held at Penn's Peak in Penn Forest Township. The frisbees were donated by Ohl Fuel Oil of Lehighton.

About 10 fire departments took part in the event, staged in the parking lot of Penn's Peak and hosted by Penn's Peak Radio.

One woman brought her German shepherd to the event, hoping to familiarize the dog with firefighters wearing gear. She said that a concern is if her house would catch fire, firefighters entering the dwelling wearing their gear "would look like aliens to the dog." As a result, the Shepherd might not be friendly to them.

The Albrightsville Fire Department had its Safe House, as well as their talking fire dog, "Sparky."

"This is a good setup," commented Mark Anderson of Kidder Township, who came to Penn's Peak to dine but stopped to view the fire department displays. "It's very educational and it's great to see so many dedicated volunteers."

The Palmerton Fire Department brought its aerial truck and extended the ladder, making an impressive appearance.

Firefighters opened the doors on their apparatus and several departments had tables set up during which they handed out the helmets, coloring books, and fire prevention literature.

Besides fire departments from Kidder and Penn Forest Townships, there were apparatus and personnel from as far away as Walnutport.
