Flag retirement ceremony

Fifty-three Panther Valley JROTC cadets took an hour long trip to Tower City for the 36th annual flag retirement ceremony held by American Legion Post 468. This event is held every year to retire flags that have been faded, torn, tattered and is no longer serviceable. The JROTC brought flags that were gathered from their local communities to add to the thousands of flags already collected. The ceremony lasted 45 minutes during which guest speakers read works on flag etiquette, proper display and why burning is the appropriate way to retire a flag. At the conclusion of the ceremony the cadets, along with members of the local Veterans Organizations, respectively retired the flags by burning them. Cadets then accompanied the veterans to a meal of hotdogs and bean soup. This program allowed cadets to realize the importance of the flag and why it is looked at as our nation's emblem.
