State police at the Lehighton barracks were summoned Sunday at 12:01 a.m. to investigate a hit-and-run accident at the Dotter's Corner Union Cemetery, Polk Township.

Police said an unknown vehicle traveling north on Memorial Drive in the township was negotiating a left-hand turn at the cemetery and began to rotate clockwise and exit the roadway. The vehicle spun 90 degrees and entered the drass area of the cemetery, and continued to travel about 90 feet, striking six headstones.

The vehicle became stuck on one of the headstones. Police said at some point, the vehicle was pulled out of the cemetery, possibly by a 4-by-4 pickup truck or SUV.

Police said the vehicle is believed to be reddish-maroon in color, with damage to its passenger's side rear quarter panel. The owner/operator is believed to live locally within Polk Township or the surrounding area, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police at (610) 377-4270.
