St. Joseph's wins CYO girls basketball title

St. Joseph's of Jim Thorpe captured the District 5 CYO 7th and 8th grade girls basketball championship this season. St. Joseph's, which had a 9-0 record in District 5 play, qualified for the Allentown Diocese playoffs where it finished in third place. Team members include, first row, from left, Jackie Condley, Payton Kovac, Molly Behan and Danielle Spillman. Second row, Kayley Kovac, Maureen Kloap, Erin Shigo, and Kaitlyn Ohl. Third row, coach Mike Spillman and coach Gene Binder. Also on the team is Nicole Salerno.

St. Jerome's wins CYO boys title

St. Jerome Regional School of Tamaqua defeated St. Joseph Regional Academy of Jim Thorpe recently at Nativity B.V.M. High School to become the District 4 and 5 boys varsity basketball CYO champions. Members of the championship team are, Front row, from left, Ethan Kuczynski, Bernie Gigli, Louie Mastrodi, Anthony Collevechio and Brady Akins. Panther Valley Elementary wrestlers bring home awards

The Panther Valley Elementary wrestling team came home from the Upper Dauphin Tournament with a number of individual awards. In addition to the individual accomplishments, the Panthers finished third in the team standings. Award winners were, kneeling, from left, Bryan Krapf (1st place and Outstanding Wrestler), Gage Breiner, Spencer Kern (4th place), Gabe Heaney (1st place), Alex Moyer (1st place), Cael Heaney, Bryce Krapf (2nd place), Eric Moyer (2nd place).

Snerr wins PP&K competition

KJ Snerr, 14, of Jim Thorpe, placed first in the 14-15-year-old age group of the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Team Championship held at the Philadelphia Eagles NovaCare Center in Philadelphia on Sunday, Nov. 27. Snerr qualified for the Team Championship by winning the local competition held in Lehighton in September and was in the top four scorers of all the regional competitions held in October, having won the Allentown regionals. Snerr is an 8th grade student at St. Joseph Regional Academy in Jim Thorpe, and played on the Marian freshman football team this past season.

Carbon United Soccer Club Mayhem team captured the Lehigh Valley Youth Soccer League Boys' U13 Championship for the 2011 Fall Season with a 7 - 1 record. The team is comprised of athletes from Palmerton, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Panther Valley, and Tamaqua School Districts. The team recently competed in the Deep Run Turkey Day Tournament held in Hilltown, PA and placed 2nd.

The six first place champions now advance to the next round of competition at the Diehl Senior High School in Danville on Sunday Feb. 12 where they will compete with the other Elks Lodge winners from the Northeast Central District. In March, the district winners will advance to the state competition at State College, PA and then to Wilkes-Barre for the regional contest. The national finals will be held in Springfield, MA in April.

Carbon United captures LVYSL U14 soccer title

Carbon United captured the Lehigh Valley Youth Soccer League Girls U14 championship this year. The team, comprised of youths for the Lehighton, Jim Thorpe, Palmerton and Panther Valley school districts, compiled a 6-1-1 record to edge out Keystone Athletic for the title. This is the second straight championship for the Carbon United U14 team, which tied for the league crown last season. Team members include, front row, from left, Sarah Moyer, Cassidy Ryan, Ilse Hassler, Camilli Principe, Meghann Principe and Kaylie Haskins.

Marian Baseball Camp awards

The 2011 Marian Colts Youth Skills Camp was held recently at the Marian Athletic Complex. The three-day camp was attended by 24 youths in 2nd through 7th grade. Players from the Colts program acted as counselors while the Marian coaching staff and head coach Jeff Nietz oversaw the instruction.

Tamaqua Blue captured the South Division championship of the District 18 9-10 year-old Little League Tournament. Tamaqua Blue will now face North Division champ Valley West in a best-of-three championship series that begins Thursday night in Jim Thorpe.
