SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The Freak really showed up for San Francisco on his biggest stage yet.

Tim Lincecum pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 in a dominating postseason debut, and the Giants scored their only run after a questionable umpiring call to beat the Atlanta Braves 1-0 in Game 1 of their NL division series Thursday night.

"As far as shutouts go I think that was up there with my better ones," said Lincecum. "I was pretty anxious to get out there a couple days ago. You just have to deal with those extra days."

ND's Wenger out for

year with concussions

Notre Dame fifth-year senior center Dan Wenger won't play this season following two concussions in preseason camp.

Wenger, of Coral Springs, Fla., was evaluated by a specialist at the University of Michigan on Wednesday. Neither the specialist nor the school cleared Wenger to return, coach Brian Kelly said Thursday.

Wenger has appeared in 29 games during his career with 19 starts.

Northern Lehigh cross country coach Dave Oertner says being the home team in the sport isn't an advantage.

"In our sport, being the home team can be a disadvantage," he said, noting that the coach spends time getting things ready, making sure the course is okay, and assuring the scoring and paperwork is in order.

"There's not a lot of time to spend with the kids before the meet," he said.

Oertner, who is the head coach of both the boys and girls cross country teams, saw both squads do well in a seven-team event held in Slatington.

Tamaqua has the luxury of two former Schuylkill League girls cross country champions on its roster with junior Amber Carroll and senior Schuyler Schmidt.

However, it is the Lady Raiders' depth that could put them over the top as they approach the league and District 11 championships later this month.

The Raiders placed eight runners in the top 12 to sweep their double dual meet with Blue Mountain (22-35) and Weatherly (15-50) Wednesday afternoon on their home 3.1 mile course on Stadium Hill.
