Tamaqua White used a dominant pitching performance to shut down the Franklin Blue offense en route to a 9-0 win in the Panther Valley Little League Tournament.

Dominic Banditelli and Tate Ligenza combined to pitch five shutout innings for Tamaqua with Banditelli going 4.1 to start the game before giving way to Ligenza for the final two outs.

Banditelli paced the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Pierce Demetriades, Randy Steigerwalt and Luke Mateyak all scored two runs in the win.

Mason Barndt had two hits for Franklin.

A bemused look on his face. A shake of his head. A chuckle to himself. I had not expected my question to the chiropractor to elicit such a response.

After reminding me to keep doing the five sets of two stretches for five seconds to counteract the lingering discomfort in my glutes brought on by crashing into a fallen cyclist and probably fracturing my pelvis last November, I asked if the stretches could be held for a longer period of time.

Perhaps people would be more understanding of bats and appreciate the role they play in the wild had they not been portrayed as the evil cohorts of Dracula as portrayed by Bella Lugosi.

In reality, bats are the ones in danger because of a deadly disease known as White-Nose Syndrome. Bats play an important role in keeping insects under control, allowing everyone to enjoy being outdoors.

Outdoors writer and lecturer Doyle Dietz, an award-winning member of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association and the Mason-Dixon Outdoor Writers Association, will present "Muzzleloader Hunting 101," focusing on deer hunting with flintlock and traditional percussion ignition rifles, Saturday, Aug. 3, beginning at 6 p.m., in the Locust Lake State Park Amphitheatre, Barnesville.

Fun is ahead for children ages 8 to 12 at Carbon County Environmental Education Center's Conservation Camp. The camp begins Monday, Aug. 12 and runs through Friday, Aug. 16 at Camp Shehaqua in Hickory Run State Park.

Registration is required. Applications are now being accepted for Conservation Camp. The week-long event takes place at Hickory Run State Park, and allows children the opportunity to connect with nature through hands-on, feet-in activities. July 27, 1989 Sharon Mack pitches a no-hitter to lead Slatedale to a 1-0 win over Allentown and clinch the Lehigh Valley softball championship. Mack strikes out nine batters and doesn't allow a walk. Tracey Holland knocks in the game's only run in the fifth inning when her single knocks in Danna Zeller. Holland finishes the contest with two hits, as does Lori Andrew.

Tamaqua White reached the .500 mark in the 9-10 year-old Panther Valley Little League Tournament with a victory on Thursday.

Tamaqua White defeated Franklin Grey, 18-6.

Michael Steigerwalt was the winning pitcher and also added two hits and two RBI for Tamaqua White. Luke Verta chipped in a two-run double while Mike Shlanta and Jimmy Akins both had two hits.

For Franklin, Crum had a hit and two RBIs.

Tamaqua White evens its record at 3-3. Franklin Gray falls to 2-2.

Flyte gets hole-in-one at Kelowitz Tourney

Greg Flyte of Jim Thorpe had a hole in one at the recent Geoff Kelowitz Invitational Golf Tournament at Mahoning Valley Country Club.

Flyte aced the No . 16 175 yard par three with a 5 iron.

Greg won it at a contest hole for a $5,000 prize.

Witnesses were CJ McGinley, Geoff Kelowitz and Dave Figura.

Nick Carullo got his first-ever hole-in-one on July 16 at Villas Crossing Golf Course in Tamaqua.

July 26, 1995 David Smith hits a pair of two-run homers to help Franklin Township open the Panther Valley Little League tournament with a 14-6 victory over Weatherly. Smith goes deep in the third and fourth innings to help the winners offset a 4-1 deficit. Pete Balogach contributes two hits, one a homer, and knocks in four runs for the winners while Mark Evans adds a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Erick Kresge gains the pitching win and also aids his opwn cause with two hits and a pair of RBIs.
