BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS Marian's Emily Pilla (left) and Lauren Nietz (in blue) both go to hit the ball as teammate Nikki Collevechio looks on from behind.

POTTSVILLE - The atmosphere at Martz Hall Tuesday night rivaled that of a girls postseason basketball game between Marian and Nativity. Anybody who knows anything about Schuylkill League athletics knows that whenever those two teams get together at Martz Hall the crowds are amped and the air is electric.

bob ford/times news Panther Valley's Amy Yusella (32) goes high to spike the ball over Blue Mountain's Taylor McGlone (19).

The Panther Valley girls' volleyball team entered the opening round of the District 11 Class AA playoffs already knowing what it had to do in order to succeed.

The only thing that stood in its way from moving on was a familiar foe in Schuylkill League counterpart Blue Mountain.

It was a bit more comforting already knowing what the Eagles were all about, especially scoring a regular season victory over them. Senior middle hitter Deanna Focht knew the Lady Panthers had to take this playoff game seriously regardless of any prior meeting, however.

bob ford/times news Marian's Marykate Sherkness (7) goes high to get a kill against Salem Christian.

It's safe to say that the Marian Fillies (15-2) volleyball team is talented. They showed just that on Halloween night dismantling Salem Christian in the District 11 Quarterfinals. It took the Fillies a little under an hour to take care of business in three straight sets 25-10, 25-11, and 25-10.

Most sports enthusiasts would agree a young team will have its struggles early on and that's exactly how the Fillies started their season. Who can blame them? The Fillies seven-girl rotation includes three freshman, two sophomores, and two juniors.

Don't let the seeds fool you.

Pleasant Valley coach John Gesiskie certainly didn't let them fool him.

Although his Bears had earned the No. 2 seed in the District 11 Class AAA Volleyball Tournament, Gesiskie knew they were the underdogs against No. 7 seed Nazareth.

Pleasant Valley didn't play like it early in the match as it looked poised to avenge a regular season sweep at the hands of Blue Eagles. But Nazareth used superior frontline depth to eventually take control and rally for a 22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-9 quarterfinal round victory Saturday morning.

STATE COLLEGE The 2011 Penn State football team has taken a page from late Raiders owner Al Davis' playbook.

That's because this year's Nittany Lions squad "just wins baby."

It's not been pretty, but Penn State is 6-0 in games decided by ten points or less after Saturday's 10-7 win against the Illini. The Lions now hold a two-game lead in the Big Ten Leaders division.

PEN ARGYL - About the only one having fun during Saturday's snowstorm was Pen Argyl's unbeaten football team.

The Green Knights (9-0), showing why they've been the talk of the Colonial League all season, had no problem keeping their footing on the white, slick Alumni Field they call home en route to a 52-0 win over Palmerton (4-5).

Coming off three straight disappointing losses, Northwestern needed a win against a quality team not only to keep its Eastern Conference playoff hopes alive, but also to pump some energy into a team that ended last season on a four-game losing streak.

The Tigers got just the win they were looking for, beating Bangor 36-28 Friday night in New Tripoli.

"This is a huge win," said Northwestern quarterback Ty Cunningham. "Coming into this game we knew we had to win out to make the postseason. We executed and came out on top."
