NANCY SCHOLZ/Special to THE TIMES NEWS Caroline Kanaskie of Tamaqua is headed to the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships as part of the Blue Raiders' 400 freestyle relay team.

After Palmerton's Sawyer Allen collected his gold medal in the 100 breaststroke during the District 11 championships, he talked about how much he was looking forward to going back to states along with teammate Katie Pielmeier.

"Its definitely cool for everyone to go and have such a high success rate as a team," Allen said. "Even though we don't have a real team, it's pretty impressive that we keep sending people out."

PV boys and girls cagers honored

The Panther Valley boys and girls Basketball teams held their annual banquet on Sunday, March 3, at Capriotti's Banquet Hall. Coaches and players who were recognized include, from left, guest speaker and coach Charles Depuy, Head Boys Coach Patrick Crampsie, Jon Taras, Steve Romanchik, Samantha Zlock and Head Girls Coach Josh Wank. Other seniors unable to attend include Brett Kerschner and James Campbell.

Palmerton rolled to an easy non-league victory over Lehighton, 5-0, in the season tennis opener for both teams.

The Bombers' singles players only lost a combined four games in earning straight set wins. Tyler Snyder, Spencer Shigo and Kevin Dayton were the individual winners for Palmerton.

ED HEDES/TIMES NEWS Palmerton tennis coach Alex Knoll talks to his team prior to the season opener against Lehighton on Monday. The Blue Bombers return everyone from last season. as does Jim Thorpe. Tamaqua, meanwhile, has had to drop its program as part of budget cuts.

Last year, the Tamaqua Area School District had the troubling issue of budget cuts to deal with. Three sports were put under scrutiny, including boys tennis, cheerleading and golf.

The cheerleading and golf teams' booster clubs were able to collect enough financial backing to rescue both of their programs. One sport that 'didn't make the cut' was the Boys tennis team.

March 12, 1997 Brianne Homyak scores a game-high 24 points and also pulls down nine rebounds to help lift the Marian girls to a 61-45 victory over Montgomery in the PIAA Class A playoffs. Homyak tallies eight of her points in the first quarter when the Fillies, coached by Paul Brutto, jump out to a 19-7 advantage. The winners receive 15 points and four steals from Erin Brady while Haley Dunlap contributes 10 points and eight boards. Also aiding the win is Adrienne Milot, who adds six assists and eight rebounds.

March 11, 2006 Northwestern's Scott Clymer scores an 8-2 decision over Adam Hluschak of Northern Lehigh to win the PIAA Class AA 125-pound championship. Clymer scores the final six points, five of them on nearfalls, to pull away for the win. Besides Hluschak, the TIMES NEWS area has two other silver medalists. Nolehi's Scott Snyder loses his first match of the season in the state finals, falling 15-6 to Adam Farrell of Fort LeBoeuf at 215 pounds. The Tigers' Dan Konno also drops his title bout, losing 15-0 to Matt Dunn of Reynolds.

NL's Herzog wins finale

HERSHEY - Ty Herzog saved his best for last.

After losing two straight matches on Friday night and leaving the arena with one banged up twisted and bloody nose, the Northern Lehigh wrestler was as focused as he could be when he entered the Giant Center on Saturday afternoon for his fifth place consolation match in the PIAA Class AA Wrestling Championships. he wanted to make sure that when he walked off the mat for the last time in his high school career, he was a winner.

And he was.

BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS Pleasant Valley's Kenny Yanovich controls Tanner Shoap of Chambersburg in their 113-pound Class AAA consolation bout at the PIAA State Wrestling Championships Friday afternoon.

Kenny Yanovich wrestled a better match than Chambersburg's Tanner Shoap during Thursday afternoon's second round of consolations at the PIAA 3A tournament.

Unfortunately, better didn't equate to victorious, as Yanovich was ousted from the tournament following a heart-breaking 4-2 defeat.

It was the third straight trip to Hershey for the Pleasant Valley junior and it'll be his third straight journey home without a medal.

It might be news, but it's hardly a surprise.

Michigan State University researchers spent time analyzing data gathered on 312 middle school students. They considered standardized academic scores, similar to Pennsylvania's PSSA test; report card grades in core classes, like math and language arts; performance in physical fitness tests, like number of push-ups completed and time in the shuttle run; and general fitness indicators, such as body fat percentage and flexibility.

HERSHEY - Northern Lehigh's Ty Herzog entered the Giant Center looking for a spot in the 152-pound Class AA final on Friday night, but ran into a buzzsaw.

Herzog lost a 7-2 decision in his semifinal match against Coudersport's Kyle Bova that dropped him into the consolation round.

Herzog wound up against Hughesville's Kyle Barnes for a chance to wrestle for third place this afternoon and lost a 13-6 decision.
