Entering last night's rivalry matchup between the Tamaqua and Panther Valley girls, the Lady Raiders had already punched their ticket to the district playoffs, while the Lady Panthers still needed a win.

When the final buzzer sounded, it was Tamaqua that picked up a 52-35 victory. With the loss, Panther Valley's chance is now down to winning on the road Friday at Pine Grove.

Bears, Mounties meet for MVC title

The Pleasant Valley wrestling team has fulfilled many goals throughout the 2011-12 season.

From placing an impressive fifth at the Reno Tournament of Champions to knocking off Nazareth for the first time in school history to reaching the semifinals at District Duals, the highlights have been numerous.

But on Wednesday night, in their final home match of the year against Stroudsburg, the Bears are hoping to add to those achievements.

Panthers earn berth in Districts

At the midway point of the season, Pat Crampsie's Panthers were sitting at 4-7 with the majority of the always daunting Schuylkill League Division 1 schedule still on the horizon.

Fast forward to the present. Panther Valley is now hot and at just the right time.

The Panther team from mid-January is long gone.

Monday night Panther Valley completed a season sweep of Tamaqua, gaining a 48-36 Schuylkill League victory.

Thorpe boys end 13-game losing streak

The Jim Thorpe boys ended a long losing streak to highlight Monday's scholastic sports action.

Jim Thorpe's Dane Ciavarella poured in 23 points to lead his squad to the 62-53 non-league win over Williams Valley.

Ciavarella's big game was aided by 14 from PJ Johnson and 13 from Darius Clark.

The victory snapped a 13-game losing streak for the Olympians (6-15).

Brendan Miller's 19 points led the way for Williams Valley.

Jim Thorpe won the JV contest, 39-34, as Michael Harleston scored 10 points.

Tamaqua girls qualify for district playoffs

The Tamaqua girls punched their ticket into the District 11 Class 3A playoffs and the Marian Fillies picked up a win in scholastic sports action last night.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-Pottsville

The Lady Raiders made the post-season with a 47-30 Schuylkill League Division 1 victory over Pottsville.

Maria Streisel scored a game-high 16 points to go along with seven assists and six rebounds. Kayla Hope added 14 points for the Lady Raiders (11-7).

For Pottsville, Taylor Eckley led the way with 10 points.

In the JV game, the Tide rolled to a 47-29 victory.

Lehighton girls no match for Pleas. Vy.

The Western Poconos are nice to visit. Just don't enter a bears den when the bears aren't hibernating.

Lehighton girls' basketball team entered a bear's den last night, the den of the Lady Bears of Pleasant Valley.

The result was a 49-7 thrashing of the visitors.

PV jumped into a 10-2 lead within the first three minutes and for most of the game just kept building on that lead. At the end of the quarter, the scoreboard read 21-3. By the half, PV had a 37-5 lead. The mercy rule went into effect very early in the second half.

Northwestern hands No. Lehigh 49-34 loss

Coming off a three-game losing streak and desperately needing a win to maintain position as a Colonial League playoff team, Northwestern snapped its skid with a 49-34 victory over Northern Lehigh Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers forced 19 Bulldog turnovers, leading to many fastbreak points and several deflating runs.

"Our pressure created a lot," said Northwestern head coach Chris Deutsch. "We had to. That's when we're at our best, when we're up-tempo and pressuring people and making them make mistakes."

There is probably no one associated with the Lehighton boys basketball program that enjoyed Tuesday night more than Nate Kresge.

The Indians' 40-33 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Pleasant Valley featured a bench-clearing celebration on the floor and even a mini court-rush by the Lehighton student section.

There were hugs, handshakes and high fives exchanged as the Indians put an end to a five-year, 59-game MVC losing streak.
