Sometimes opportunities come when you least expect it. They suddenly appear and you take them and run.

That was the case with 'new' Marian softball coach Joe DeAngelo.

DeAngelo, head basketball coach in the early '90s, assistant baseball coach for 19 seasons, and additional three as an assistant to Paul Brutto's girls basketball team, is also a teacher at Marian.

So, when previous head coach Bud Lauster stepped down after last season, the spring time move from baseball to softball seemed like the perfect fit.

When asked how the PIAA proposed move of girls' soccer from the spring to the fall in 2012 would affect his program, Lehighton head coach Dan Dagorn didn't mince his reply. Already faced this season with the absence of a junior varsity program, Dagorn believes the situation can become fatal.

"It will destroy the program," said the second-year girls' head coach who has also coached the boys' program. "Right now, we are struggling with our numbers. We don't have the girls coming out.

In the sport of tennis, there are different aspects to take into consideration as a coach, when attempting to field a team. The most paramount part is numbers. After the team's numbers are up, then the program can thrive.

The Lehighton Area School district announced at Wednesday's school board meeting that Randy Frey will be the new high school track and field head coach, effective March 11.

Randy Frey will replace Norm Frey, who resigned last week.
