It was a good day for the Pleasant Valley track team, but it wasn't as good for Lehighton.

The Bears picked up boys and girls wins over East Stroudsburg South, while the Indians dropped both of their meets t Stroudsburg.

The Pleasant Valley track teams posted a Mountain Valley Conference sweep over host East Stroudsburg South.

On the boys side, eight different Bears scored individual wins. Distance runners Alex Larkin and Anthony Ruiz finished first in the 1600 and 3200 respectively, while both teamed up for a win in the 3200 relay.

The weather conditions were damp, dreary and disgustingly dismal, but that didn't stop the Palmerton track teams from shining brightly to outscore host Northern Lehigh in a Colonial League meet yesterday afternoon.

In fact, the Lady Bombers improved to 3-0 on the season with a 123-26 win, while the male Bombers pulled out a 83.67-65.33 win for the PHS sweep.

This time, Northwestern didn't let a bad start prevent it from winning.

The Tigers allowed Palmerton to score three times in the top of the first inning, but roared back for a 6-5 Colonial League victory on Monday afternoon.

It was the first win of the season for Northwestern, which suffered setbacks to Emmaus and Pen Argyl last week.

Northwestern and Pleasant Valley gained wins in both baseball and soccer on Monday.

Other local winners included the Lehighton and Northern Lehigh baseball squads.

Palmerton-Northwestern

Northwestern scored five runs in the first inning and closed it out with four in the fifth to take an 11-1 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Payton Bachman had two hits, stole two bases and scored three runs for the Tigers (1-1, 1-2). Sawyer Smith also had two hits, scored a run and had three RBI.

The Tamaqua baseball team picked up a victory to highlight Saturday's scholastic sports action.

Tamaqua-Hamburg

Tamaqua posted an 11-7 non-league win over Hamburg.

Mike Streisel picked up a mound save and also finished 2-for-4 with a triple to lead the Blue Raiders. Luke Matsago (single, double, two RBIs) and Matt DelBorrello (two-run double) aided in the effort.

Despite its best efforts, Mother Nature's trio of rain, sleight and snow couldn't stop some of the area's runners, jumpers and throwers.

Tamaqua held its first annual invitational track meet Friday evening with 12 different teams in attendance. The weather forecast held the event in limbo most of the week, but Tamaqua athletic director Michael Homyak decided to give the go ahead yesterday morning. The conditions were far from good, but Tamaqua's new all-weather track served its purpose in the end.

Friday's rain and cold temperatures postponed almost the entire scholastic schedule in the TIMES NEWS coverage area.

The only two events played were Mountain Valley Conference soccer matches.

Pleasant Vy.-ES South

Pleasant Valley scored less than a minute into the game and made it stand up for a 1-0 Mountain Valley Conference victory over East Stroudsburg South.

The Bears wasted little time in jumping on top as Hannah Bernier scored just 50 seconds into the game. Katie Forte assisted on the goal.

Tamaqua and Northern Lehigh picked up wins on the baseball diamond on Tuesday afternoon in local sports action.

The Olympians dropped another non-league decision at the hands of Northern Lehigh, 13-0 in five innings.

Marcus Kremposky finished 2-for-3 on the day with a single, double and two RBI for the Bulldogs (1-0). Teammate Jake Kern had a double with two RBI, while Ryan Trexler was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

Sean Green and Justin Kaminski had sole hits for JT (0-2).

BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS Marian's Bobby Kelly stays a step ahead of Jim Thorpe's Phil Schrone to win the 110 high hurdles in 17.2 seconds.

There may not have been that many spectators at Marian and Jim Thorpe's track meet on Tuesday, but that didn't stop the Olympians' P.J. Johnson from putting on a show.

Johnson placed first in all four events that he competed in en route to leading his fellow track team to a 75-66 victory over the Colts. The junior took home both sprinting events (100M and 200M), the long jump and was the last leg of the winning 400M Relay team. As it turns out, he wasn't even 100 percent.

It was a successful season opener for a few TIMES NEWS area track teams Tuesday.

The Northern Lehigh boys and Palmerton girls both won a pair of decisions while Pleasant Valley swept its MVC meet with East Stroudsburg North.
