Jim Thorpe boys, girls sweep

The Jim Thorpe boys and girls cross country teams continued their early season success, posting a sweep in a Schuylkill League tri-meet while the Marian boys and girls went 0-2.

Jon Condly earned a convincing win in the boys' race, finishing with a time of 17:43, 19 seconds ahead of teammate Christian Fields. For Condly and Fields, it's the continuation of a healthy competition that has propelled the Olympians to a 6-0 record to start the season."When we're practicing, we're usually together," Condly said of running with Fields. "And we usually push each other at practice and at meets. We typically train together, and I think it's helped both of us."The success of Condly and Fields has rubbed off on the rest of the team, giving coach Drew Benyo one of the best squads in his 26 years at Jim Thorpe."It's a competition between the two of them, of course; they both want to finish first," Benyo said. "But the guys behind them also see that. They know how hard these kids are working and they are working just as hard to close that gap."That's one of the things I stressed to them early in the season and they're working very hard to do that. "The hard work has certainly paid off, as the Olympians swept the top seven places in the meet.Marian's Nick Hopeck paced the Colts with an 11th place finish in a time of 21:07, which was behind the Shenandoah Valley's top three runners."Our guys were haggling around with them there for the first mile or so, but after the first mile that's where we seem to be dropping off in most of our meets," Marian coach Jeremy Dormer said. "We're usually competitive in that first mile, then we lose our speed and slow down."We just have to get the guys a little bit more conditioned to keep up with going out hard in that first mile and keeping the pace through the whole entire course."Jim Thorpe's Courtney Capper had no trouble maintaining her pace over the 3.1mile course, winning the girls' race with a time of 22:30. The Lady Olympians had three of the top four and eight of the top 10 finishers."My teammates really pushed it today and I'm really happy about that," Capper said. "They pushed it and performed really well today. We started to go out a little bit faster than usual and just push the whole race."Much like Condly and Fields, Capper has inspired her teammates and helped the Lady Olympians to a 4-2 record in a highly competitive Schuylkill League."The girls know that it's there," Benyo said. "They might not have the talent that she (Courtney) has, but they're out there doing the best that they can and that's all you can ask and that's all I ever ask."Courtney's a special one, as she was a state qualifier a year ago as a junior and it's her goal to go back again this year. There's no reason why she can't; she's winning and she's consistent, no matter the field size."Marian's Nicole Baba paced the Fillies, finishing 16th with a time of 26:57, followed by freshman Kristina Maunis in 17th, who finished with a time of 27:06.The strong showing by the two underclassmen gives the Fillies a solid foundation moving forward."We're a small school and we hardly get that many out for cross country," Dormer said. "I'm just happy with the numbers that we have and feel blessed that we have enough to field a full team."BOYSJim Thorpe 15, Marian 50Jim Thorpe 15, Shenandoah 50Shenandoah 20, Marian 351.
