Fire damages unoccupied home

Firefighters responded to a blaze at an unoccupied home in Middleport around 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Middleport Fire Company Fire Chief Darren Borger said that firefighters arrived to 11 Kaska William St. to see flames shooting from the second story of the home.Responding were firefighters from Middleport, Kaska, New Philadelphia, Port Carbon, Pottsville, Tuscarora, Walker/New England and others.The fire was discovered by neighbors Drake Ulrich and his girlfriend Bethany Stoops as they pulled in the back driveway of their home. After smelling smoke and seeing it rise from the home, both they called 911. In addition, they knocked on neighbors' doors alerting them of the fire. They recalled seeing the windows of the home break from the fire's heat.Ulrich said firefighters were on scene within minutes of their call."Firefighters did a great job preventing this fire from spreading to adjacent homes," said Stoops.Neighbors said the home was vacant for a couple years and was currently being remodeled by its new owners.According to the Schuylkill Parcel Locator online, the house is was sold to Alfred Zimmerman, Branchdale, in June for $17,500 from Paul and Mary Ann Rossohocyaul.No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
