Upsets highlight playoff action

It was a wild and crazy night in the Tamaqua Area Athletic Center on Monday evening, as the Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission's Summer Basketball League playoffs got underway.

Both quarterfinal round games came down to the closing seconds, as Batter's Box held on for a two-point victory over DJ 101, while a desperation half-court shot at the buzzer by Naveen Mohuiddin sent Vesuvio's into Wednesday's semifinals.MONDAY'S QUARTFINAL RESULTSDJ 101-Batter's BoxIn a back-and-forth game that went down to the wire, fifth-seeded Batter's Box pulled off a 58-56 victory over fourth-seeded DJ 101 to advance to Wednesday's semifinal round game against top-seed Mike Stower's Coal & Oil (8-0).With DJ 101 trailing 57-53, Steve Ennis nailed a three-pointer to bring his team to within a point (57-56) with 1.6 seconds remaining on the clock. Forced to foul, DJ 101 sent Bekim Mehmeti to the free throw line with 0.3 ticks left. Mehmeti made the first, missed the second, and time expired.Erick Trabal led Batter's Box with 19 points, including three treys. Aaron Mantz and Kyle McGee added 15 and 13 points respectively. For DJ 101, Rob Miller buried three three-pointers and scored 17 points. Mike Conley followed with 13 points in the losing effort.R.R. Frey Services-Vesuvio'sIn perhaps one of the wildest finishes to a basketball game in ESRC history, sixth-seeded Vesuvio's drained a desperation half-court shot at the buzzer to gain a 63-60 upset victory over third-seeded R.R. Frey Services. With R.R. Frey leading 60-58, Naveen Mohuiddin converted a layup with 1.6 second remaining to tie the game up at 60-60. Following a Vesuvio's timeout and R.R. Frey inbounding under its own basket, Ryan Achenbach threw a three-quarter length pass that was deflected by Vesuvio's Dan Maguschak into the hands of Mohuiddin. Mohuiddin took one quick dribble and heaved up a shot from within the half court circle, and as time expired with the ball in the air, the shot banked in for game-winner.Former East Stroudsburg University standout Mike DeMarco paced Vesuvio's with 21 points, while Dan Maguschak added 14. Mohuiddin (also a former ESU player) netted 11 points, including five in the game's final 1.6 seconds. For R.R. Frey Services, Ryan Achenbach tallied 10 field goals for a game-high 28 points. Achenbach scored the first 11 points for his team and scored 17 first-half points. Jimmy Barron also added 13 points in the loss.THIS WEEK'S PLAYOFF SCHEDULEWednesday, July 24(at North and Middle Ward Playground)SEMIFINALS6:30 p.m. - #2 Ryan's Oil & Heating (6-2) vs. #6 Vesuvio's (5-4)7:30 p.m. - #1 Mike Stower Coal & Oil (8-0) vs. #5 Batter's Box (5-4)Friday, July 26(at North and Middle Ward Playground)CHAMPIONSHIP GAME7 p.m. - TBA vs. TBA
