Caroline Kanaskie is a bit bummed, but she isn't quite going to let it slow her down during her senior year.
The returning state qualifier has already tasted a Schuylkill League championship during her high school career, so the Tamaqua senior doesn't plan to dwell on the fact that a league title is all but out of reach.
"It's kind of a bummer that we're not going to be league champs," Kanaskie said. "But every single meet we all know that we need to get out there and do our best. Without the pressure on the team as a whole in the league, everybody just goes out there and tries to get their own personal best each time we compete. That's what is kind of more important anyway."
That mentality helped the Blue Raider girls (5-3 overall; 2-1 Sschuylkill League) score a 108-62 victory over Pottsville Thursday. The Tide spoiled a sweep for the hosts however by recording a 101-65 win.
Tamaqua's girls team has already lost to undefeated Blue Mountain. Unless someone upsets the Eagles, the Lady Raiders will be relegated to second place this season.
Kanaskie swam to four first-place finishes against the Tide. Kanaskie started the meet swimming the first leg of the winning 200 medley relay and ended the meet by swimming the third leg of the Blue Raiders' winning 200 freestyle relay team. In between, Kanaskie touched the wall first in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events.
It's obvious to her Blue Raider mentor Ashley Stanek that she's sticking true to her words this season.
"A lot of that competitiveness falls back on Caroline's attitude," Stanek said. "She's very positive. She got out there today and she wanted to win and that's what she did.
"She's truly competitive. Last year, she got a taste of states for the first time so I think to be able to compete at that level gave her a little bit more confidence for her senior year."
Kanaskie was in good company as Blue Raider teammate Joann Butkus (50 and 100 free, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay) was victorious in all four of her events.
Miranda Amey (200IM, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay) and Carly Troving er (100 breaststroke, 200 medley relay, 200 Freestyle Relay) swam to three first-place finishes.
Mikayla Boyle (100 backstroke, 200 freestyle relay) and Danielle DiCindio (200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay) were part of a Blue Raiders' squad that captured top honors in all but one event and recorded a sweep of the top three times in two of the individual events - 200 IM, 50 freestyle.
It was the kind of day that first-year head coach was glad to see in a midseason league showdown, especially after her team had swum six meets during a two week span. To her, the most important thing was the idea that a lot of her swimmers that day pushed personal records.
"A few personal best times are definitely good at this time of the season," Stanek said. "It's not really expected of them at this point, but still they're continuing to train really hard to do their best.
"It was nice to have that type of competition against Pottsville, which was something that helped push them to get better times. It's always nice to swim against Pottsville."
Matt Stanek (200 and 500 Freestyle) and Jake Kropp shined regardless of a Blue Raiders' (3-5; 1-2 SL) setback with multiple individuals victories.
