Tamaqua man faces DUI, other charges

Norman Sterling Jr. 59, of 306 S. Arlington St., Tamaqua, faces charges from an incident that happened in the 200 block of West Water Street, Lansford.

He's charged with two counts of driving under the influence, driving without insurance, and operating a vehicle following suspension of registration.According to an affidavit of probable cause, here's what happened:Officer Joseph Reis was on patrol at 9:52 p.m. June 7 when he saw Sterling driving a Ford Ranger. The vehicle was running with the transmission in reverse. Sterling was passed out with his foot on the brake and his head on the steering wheel.Reis shook Sterling, who woke and said he had a headache.Reis asked Sterling to put the vehicle in park and turn it off. Sterling took his foot off the brake and the vehicle started to move in reverse. He then put it in park and got out. His speech was slurred and he had a hard time standing straight. He agreed to take field sobriety tests, but performed poorly.A blood-alcohol test revealed the presence of narcotic painkillers morphine, oxycodone, and anxiety disorder drugs.
