AMVETS recognize contest winners

Lehighton AMVETS, Elwood Miller Post 106, recently recognized the winners of the 2011 - 2012 Americanism Contests. This year's theme for both the poster and essay contests was "I am proud to be an American because …"

Third grade poster contest winners are First Place - Lily McDonough, Shull-David Elementary School ; Second Place - Lindsay Rohlfing, SS. Peter and Paul School ; and Third Place - Damon Shumway, Shull-David Elementary School .Winners of the seventh grade essay contest are First Place - Miguel Gonzales, SS. Peter and Paul School ; Second Place - Amy McConnell, SS. Peter and Paul School ; and Third Place - Matthew Strubinger, Lehighton Area Middle School .This competition was open to all Lehighton area third grade students for the poster contest and seventh grade students for the essay contest. Prizes for both contests are First Place - $50; Second Place - $30; and Third Place - $20.Commander Robert Rehnert presented the awards during the Lehighton Area Middle School spring instrumental concert. Thanking all of the students who participated in the contests, he said, "Without them, it would not be a success."For more information about AMVETS, visit
