Bulldogs, Bears, Raiders get soccer wins

Northern Lehigh, Pleasant Valley and Tamaqua picked up boys soccer wins over the weekend, while the Olympian girls also finished on the winning side.

FIELD HOCKEYN'western-Moravian Aca.The Lady Tigers battled the Lady Lions to a one-all score at the end of regulation, before Moravian Academy's Natalie Drelles scored the game winner in overtime for the 2-1 victory.Northwestern tied the game up in the second half off a goal from Katelyn Freeman, who was fed an assist by Sara Jones, in the losing effort.Moravian Academy (8-2), also got a goal from Makenzie O'Brien in the second half.Lorraine Feinour had 14 saves in net for Northwestern, who dropped to 6-3-2.BOYS SOCCERJim Thorpe-Pine GroveTaking a 1-0 lead into halftime, Pine Grove blew up for three goals in the second half, to eventually pull away from Jim Thorpe, 4-2.Corey Ligenza scored the Olympians' two goals in the game, as Matt Rich and Caleb Heller added assists.For the Cardinals, Cole Schwalm had two scores, while Brett Weber and Kyler Burke both added individual goals in the winning effort.Jim Thorpe's Justin Kaminski was busy in goal, as he stopped 23 shots.PM West-No. LehighNo. Lehigh got big games from the brothers Shiffert to pull out a non-league shutout win over Pocono Mountain West, 5-0.Zeb Shiffert had two goals and an assist, while Channing had one of each. Teammate Jimmy Bilger also had an impact, recording two goals, with Ryan Perkowski and Josh Prisgash chipping in feeds.Goalie Allan Sipos had three saves in the shutout effort as the Bulldogs moved to 7-5 on the year.Pleasant Valley-FreedomThe Bears picked up a 2-1 win over Freedom to improve to 3-6-1 on the season.Blake Evans and Chris Symes both tallied goals in the game for the win, as teammate Chriss Neff added an assist. Schyler Jacobsen had four saves in the winning effort.For the Patriots, Brendan Kaulius scored the sole score.Upper Dauphin-TamaquaThe Blue Raiders got two second half goals to pull off the 2-0 win over Upper Dauphin.Ben Miller and Justin Delp both had tallies, as teammates Cesar Picone and Kyle Sabol assisted the scores.Tyler Cimino had six saves in the Tamaqua net, recording the shutout.Tamaqua outshot Upper Dauphin 14-7.Weatherly-HalifaxHalifax upped its record to 10-1-1 on the season with a 9-0 win over the Wreckers.The Wreckers were outshot 34-1 in the contest .GIRLS SOCCERNativity BVM-Jim ThorpeThe Lady Olympians walloped Nativity over the weekend, 9-2.Chelsea Smelas had three goals and three assists for Jim Thorpe. Teammate Kristin Lawrence had three goals, as well, with one assist, while Cat Condly also stepped up with two scores and an assist. Teammate Alyssa Smith had the remaining score in a great team effort, as goalie Celeste Meriano had two saves.CROSS COUNTRYCardinal ClassicJim Thorpe partcipated in the 10th annual Cardinal Classic in Pine Grove and finished third in both races.Lebanon won the boys race with Carlos Rivera crossing the finish line in 17:14. Jim Thorpe's Chris Boyd was seventh with a time of 18:27 and Jonathan Condly was ninth in 18:33.In the girls race, Minersville finished first in team points, while Brittany Ulrich of Lebanon finished first with a time of 20:41. Jim Thorpe's Caitlin Liscinski was second at 21:41, while Courtney Capper was fourth in 21:59.
