Lansford Borough council on Wednesday hired Susan Gibiser of Andreas as its new secretary-treasurer.

Gibiser replaces Renee Slakoper, who resigned as of May 25. Pending background checks, Gibiser will start her new job on Aug. 1 at a probationary wage of $13.50 an hour.Council voted to hire with Rosemary Cannon, Mary Kruczek, Danielle Smith, Andrew Snyder, Lenny Kovach and president Adam Webber approving. Councilman Tommy Vadyak had to leave the meeting before the vote was taken.Gibiser most recently worked in a similar capacity for West Penn Township.Gibiser was among several applicants for the job. Officials had narrowed the field to six and held interviews on Monday and Tuesday.in a related move, council also voted to seek a replacement for the temporary clerk's position from Premiere Staffing.Also, Councilwoman Smith proposed a special meeting be set up for an executive session with Solicitor Michael Greek to seek his advice concerning a personnel issue.Slakoper was hired in March of 2010 to replace Nicole (Tessitore) Beckett, who left to take a similar job in Lehighton, and resigned on May 25. Clerk Bridget Cannon resigned shortly thereafter.In a related matter Wednesday, council agreed to have its current auditor perform an interim audit before Gibiser comes on board.Also on Wednesday, council members expressed frustration with delay in installing a chimney liner at the borough offices above American Fire Co. No. 1 at 26-28 E. Patterson Street.Council on June 22 awarded the chimney liner job to Mauch Chunk Chimney Sweeps, which had bid $2,980 to do the work. The company was among three bidders for the job. Councilman Tommy Vadyak suggested ending the contract with Mauch Chunk and instead using the next lowest responsible bidder.That discussion led to Cannon expressing concerns that work on the aging borough building is not moving fast enough. She said windows should be opened on sunny dry days to help dry out the interior, which has developed a mold problem stemming from a leaking chimney. Council also agreed to have specifications drafted in order to seek bids on a new roof for there building.In other matters, Kovach said the borough needs another full-time worker. One of the current part-time workers would be a good candidate, he said. Money for the position is available after maintenance manager Toby Krajcirik resigned in January. Council had earlier discussed hiring another part-time worker.Council also approved plans for an American Legion Riders motorcycle event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 28 on Tunnel Street between Ridge and Patterson streets.However, council's Public Safety Committee wants to meet with Lansford Ambulance volunteers to discuss the group's request to hold a "boot drop" fundraising event on Sept. 3 at Patterson and Springgarden streets. several council members were unsure about the state Department of Transportation's requirements for such activities.Also on Wednesday, council accepted the resignation of Tom Evans from the Parks and Recreation Commission. Evans, will continue to maintain the public swimming pool, provided he remains on the payroll, according to a recent letter he sent to council.
