Brush fire along Turnpike

Franklin Township and Parryville firefighters were kept busy Saturday afternoon when the Carbon County communications center was flooded with reports of a very large and long brush fire burning along the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The calls started pouring in just after 1 p.m. reporting the fire at the 78 mile marker north bound and approximately a mile in length. The Carbon county firefighters along with members of the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry found numerous fires burning along the berm of the roadway. State police diverted traffic to one lane as fire fighters battled the fires. Firefighters were later called back to the area three times, one for a car fire, another for a tractor trailer which was carrying a large amount of fuel and another for a re-kindling of the first fire.
