A Lehighton man has been charged in the theft of a $250 Columbia bicycle from a grocery store employee.

Derek Michael Beers, 20, of the 500 building, Gypsy Hill Apartments, was arrested and will be charged via criminal compliant summons with theft and receiving stolen property, said Mahoning Township Police Chief Kenneth J. Barnes.According to his report, the theft was reported to police by store management on Aug. 10 at about 9 a.m. A follow-up was done by Officer Chris Ritter. Based on surveillance photos and other evidence, a suspect was identified.Officer Ritter went to the residence of the suspect, accompanied by a Lehighton borough officer. The suspect was confronted and admitted to stealing the bike, which was recovered from inside his apartment.
