Tamaqua clinches girls soccer title

Tamaqua clinched the Schuylkill League Division I Girls Soc cer title on Senior Night with a 5-0 win.

GIRLS SOCCERPine Grove-TamaquaAli Updike scored the Raiders' (15-0,12-0) first goal, followed by goals from Kayla Hope and Lauren Mateyak. Hope added another goal in the seconds half along with Brittany Hill.Tamaqua's defense held Pine Grove to five shots and picked up its sixth shutout in a row.Jim Thorpe-Schuylkill HavenThe Hurricanes posted a 3-0 win over the Lady Olympians as Bree Ann Frederick scored a goal in each half to lead her team to the win.Victoria Lord added an insurance goal in the second half with 10:07 left in the game. Phelicia Schuller assisted Frederick on the first goal, while Emily Donahoe assisted on the second goal. Julia Blackwell had the assist on the goal by Lord.Schuylkill Haven had 23 shots on goal, while the Lady Olympians had eight. Lehighton quickly countered with a goal by freshman Sarah Keer on an assist by University of Albany-bound Corri McConville.Donegal put the pressure on in the beginning of the second half, but the defense held strong and some timely saves by goalie Sarah Snyder kept the game tied. Teammate Olivia Danner assisted on the play.Northwestern improves to 9-5-1 (8-5-1), while Palmerton drops to 2-13.VOLLEYBALLMahanoy Area-Panther ValleyPanther Valley handled Mahanoy Area with ease, winning 25-9, 25-4, 25-20 in Schuylkill League play.Katie Zulic led the Lady Panthers (9-3) with 28 service points and ten aces.Teammates Christa Mantz and Amy Yusella each added ten kills.
