Ryan A. Kleintop has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. The six-week, two-phased orientation program must be successfully completed by the cadets prior to entering their freshman year. The training prepares men and women to meet the rigorous mental and physical challenges experienced by new cadets.

Two Carbon County students graduated recently from Milton Hershey School® (MHS), a privately endowed school located in Hershey. They are Nicolette DeJohn, daughter of Nicholas DeJohn, Junedale; and Rosanna Riggio, daughter of Grace Riggio, Lehighton.

Crystal A. Bauer, daughter of Shawn and Annamarie J. Bauer, received a $1,000 Gift of Hope Scholarship, awarded by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. She is a member of the Effort United Methodist Church. Bauer is currently working as a summer employee for the United Methodist Camps of Greater New Jersey as a Camp Counselor.

"Leading these kids has been a delight," said Bauer.

Erin R. Litsch of Tamaqua has attained the Dean's List for the spring semester at Muhlenberg College of Allentown, after completing her freshman year. Muhlenberg is one of the most highly ranked Liberal Arts colleges in the United States.

Erin is majoring in English and minoring in Art History.

She is also enrolled in the Secondary Education Certification Program.

Matthew Dunbar of Jim Thorpe recently graduated from Bloomsburg University with a bachelor of science in business administration, having earned a degree in marketing.

He is the son of Ronald and Jean Dunbar and the grandson of Charlotte Kemmerle, all from the heights section of Jim Thorpe.

Dunbar acquired his real estate license three years ago and is currently a full-timerealtor at the office of Mary Enck Realty in Albrightsville.

He was a 2006 honors graduate of Jim Thorpe Area High School.

Angela M. Petro, daughter of John and Ann Marie Petro of Tamaqua, graduated from Drexel University, College of Arts and Sciences, Philadelphia, with a bachelor of arts degree in Political Science with a minor in History. She attained a 3.87 cumulative grade point average while at the university.

A 2005 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, she is the granddaughter of Vince and Marie Gallagher of Lansford and John and Gerrie Petro of Summit Hill.

Shannon King of Philadelphia, daughter of Mary Ellen King, graduated from Cabrini College with a master's degree in Education. Commencement exercises were held May 16. A graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, she earned a bachelor's degree from Penn State University and is employed by the Coatesville Area School District.

King is the granddaughter of Mary Wychulis of Tamaqua and the late Carl Wychulis and Nicholas and Nancy King of Coaldale.

Robert "Jake" Long, son of Robert Long of Tamaqua and the late Deborah Millet Long, graduated from the University of Florida, Gainesville, with a bachelor of science degree in History, with a minor in Business Administration. Commencement exercises were held May 8. A graduate of Tamaqua High School, he is the grandson of George and Lois Millet, Ruth Long and the late William Long, all of Tamaqua.

Long, his wife, the former Jennie DeMambro, and their daughter, Harper Jane, live in Gainesville, FL.

Seaman Apprentice Joseph M. Zalek, Jr, a 2007 graduate of Pleasant Valley High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Zalek completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
