Reading and Northern Railroad announces that Dennis Shaffer has been named the vice president of business development.

Shaffer has a broad range of executive experience in the railroad and distribution business, having held senior level positions in operations, marketing, finance, and planning for several railroads; as well as hands-on experience in organizing and starting new railroad and distribution ventures. As part of the railroad's management team Shaffer will focus on new business development and development of long term strategic initiatives.

Marcin

John Marcin, son of John and Frances Marcin of Tamaqua, was the United States representative at the 13th International World Conference for Investment Casting held in Kyoto, Japan in April 2012. This conference, which is held every four years assembles both suppliers of investment castings and original equipment manufacturers who utilize investment castings representing a $12 billion global market.

Air National Guard Airman Glenn B. Marchesi graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Marchesi is the son of Julie Marchesi of Laurel Road, Lehighton.

Steven C. Kurtz, son of Alan and Andrea Kurtz of New England Valley, Tamaqua, graduated with honors from Penn College of Technology. Commencement exercises were held in May. Kurtz, earned a 4.0 grade point average in the final quarter of the Physical Fitness Specialist Program.

The 2007 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School also holds an associate degree in Business from Lehigh Carbon Community College.

Kurtz resides in Williamsport, where he is employed as a personal trainer and a group exercise instructor at the Fitness Factory.

Katz

David N. Katz, son of Jimmy and Donna Kravelk of Nesquehoning, graduated on May 11, from Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. Gallaudet University, established in 1864 by an Act of Congress and signed by President Abraham Lincoln, is the only university that is designed with programs and services specifically to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students.

He earned a bachelor of arts in deaf studies and American Sign Language.

Maff

Anthony J. Maff III, son of Anthony and Veronica Maff of Coaldale, graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor of science degree in Business. The 2008 graduate of Marian Catholic High School majored in Business Management and Marketing, earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Commencement exercises were held in May.

Maff plans to further his education in pursuit of a master's degree.

Michael Stauffer, a member of the Royal Battalion ROTC, based at the University of Scranton, recently completed the Army Combat Diver Qualification Course, held May 20-July 6, at the Special Forces Underwater Operations School at Trumbo Point Naval Academy, Key West, Fla.

The school is run by the 1st Special Warfare Group, U.S. Army, John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, and is regarded by many soldiers as the toughest military school to endure.

Katelyn Collevechio, daughter of Robert and Mary Jean Collevechio, 128 E. Hazard St., Summit Hill, has been named to the Dean's List for the Spring semester at LaSalle University, Philadelphia.

A graduate of Marian High School, Hometown, she is a speech language pathology major at the university's School of Nursing and Health Sciences. She attained a 3.93 grade point average in the last semester.

Stephanie Gursky, daughter of Randy Gursky, Northport, Fla., and Tracey Gursky of Lehighton, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Penn State University.

Stephanie earned a 3.93 GPA. She is in the College of Education.

Jerome E. Betz III, son of Jerome and Nancy Betz of Hometown, has been named to the Dean's List for the Spring semester at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. The 2011 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School earned a 3.50 grade point average, majoring in the Pre-Physician's Assistant Program with a minor in Psychology. He is the great grandson of Anna Severa of McAdoo.
