Cedar Crest College has announced its fall 2009 dean's list. This academic honor is reserved for students who earn at least a 3.65 grade-point average on a 4-point scale. Students from the TIMES NEWS coverage area who achieved dean's list status for the fall semester include:

Hai-Lung Dai, dean of The College of Science and Technology at Temple University, announces that Matthew Buchman of Palmerton was named to the dean's list for the 2009 fall semester at The College of Science and Technology at Temple University.

To earn dean's list status, a student must have a 3.57 GPA or better for the semester.

Army National Guard Pvt. Paul F. Katona III has graduated from the Direct Fire Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training.

Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Ryan M. DeWire has been mobilized and activated at Fort Dix, N.J., in preparation for deployment to serve in support of either Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom. The soldier is a member of the 528th Finance Detachment, based in Lebanon.

The soldiers are normally activated from Army Reserve or Army National Guard units from throughout the U.S. They go through a series of in-processing procedures and training classes that prepare them for skills and situations they may face in their deployed environment.

Army National Guard Staff Sgt. John P. Strizak is returning to the U.S. after a deployment to Iraqi or Afghanistan in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom, respectively.

The soldiers return to Fort Dix, N.J. for debriefing, evaluations and out-processing procedures before returning to their regularly assigned Army Reserve or National Guard units.

The sergeant served in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Iraq Theater of Operations.

Lauren Kaylie Marek has been named to the dean's list for the fall 2009 semester at Misericordia University in Dallas.

She is enrolled in the medical imaging program and obtained a 3.96 GPA.

Marek will do her clinicals at Mercy Hospital in Scranton three days a week. Currently a junior, she expects to graduate in the spring of 2011 and continue education, specializing in diagnostic sonography at Misercordia.

Marek is a 2007 graduate of Panther Valley High School and is the daughter of Larry and Kathy Marek of Summit Hill.

The Palmerton Concourse Club honored Madeline Koller as a Guiding Star.

She is the daughter of Lisa and Ronald Koller. Her hobbies and talents are horseback riding, baking, baby-sitting, tutoring and working with children. Her school activities include Leo Club, vice president; National Honor Society, treasurer; Environmental Club, treasurer; and vice president of the PAHS Class of 2010. Her community activities include Relay for Life and Palmerton Library's Summer Reading Program.

Koller will be attending a four-year college to attain a degree in biochemistry.

Kristi Troch, daughter of Kevin and Lisa Troch of Lehighton, has been named to the dean's list for the fall 2009 semester at the University of Albany, New York.

A 2009 graduate of Lehighton Area High School, Troch has earned a 3.75 grade point average majoring in human biology/pre-med.

Troch is a member of the University of Albany field hockey team. She also earned 2009 American East Conference Fall Academic Commissioner's Honor Roll.

She is the granddaughter of Elsie Strohl of Lehighton, William Serfass Sr. of Palmerton, and Brent and Marie Troch of Coplay.
