Donald W. Snyder, President at Lehigh Carbon Community College, recently announced the Dean's List for the Fall 2009 semester.

Students with an academic grade point average of at least 3.50 achieve Dean's List status.

Julie Wagaman of Walnutport, a senior at Northern Lehigh Area High School has been named the Slatington Woman's Club January Girl of the Month

She is active in her school's softball and cross country teams, Spanish Club, National Honor Society and Girl Scouts.

Julie has won Honorable Mention Colonial League Pitcher, Northern Lehigh High School Most Outstanding Pitcher, Blue Bat Award, Bronze Award, Channel 13 Player of the Week and Morning Call Player of the Week.

He is the son of Sharon and Tm Oravec of Andreas and the grandson of Betty and George Vincent of Coaldale and Ethel Oravec of Andreas.

Matthew J. Reis, son of Richard and Cheryl Reis of Jim Thorpe, received academic honors at West Chester University, by making the University's dean's list for fall semester 2009.

A junior at West Chester University, Reis is majoring in respiratory therapy in the University's College of Health Services. He earned a 4.93 grade point average.

Marine Corps Pvt. Mitchel A. Mertz, son of Pamela Heritage of Forest City, Pa. and Jodey Mertz of Coaldale, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.

Navy Constructionman Kenneth E. Phillips, Jr., son of Karen L. Phillips of Walnutport and Kenneth E. Phillips of Whitehall recently began an almost five-month deployment to Afghanistan while assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133, homeported at Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Miss.

NMCB-133's primary mission on deployment will be providing construction support to improve the living and working quarters for the 30, 000 troops needed in Afghanistan.

A 2009 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, she is the daughter of Jon and Debbie Davies of Tuscarora and a granddaughter of Betty Davies and Gwen Evans of Tamaqua.

Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Scott J. Sassaman is returning to the U.S. after a deployment to Iraqi or Afghanistan in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom, respectively.

The soldiers return to Fort Dix, N.J. for debriefing, evaluations and out-processing procedures before returning to their regularly assigned Army Reserve or National Guard units.

Sassaman, an aircraft structural repairer, is a member of Company B, 628th Aviation Support Battalion, Fort Indiantown, Annville. He has served in the military for 23 years.
