Bloodmobile

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile visited Tamaqua on Nov. 17, collecting 56 units of the "gift of life." Four first time donors heeded the call Joseph Zaprazny, Judy Brennan, Elizabeth Ostrowski and John Taylor.

The Salvation Army gymnasium was converted into a blood center through the efforts of Randy Gormley, Jack Quinn, Bob Zeplin, Peter Shlanta and Jack Rarick. Additional volunteers included Jean Stephens, Edie Hoffman, Ardis Gerhard, Dolores Martin, Dolly Shirey and Bob Shirey.

Owl Creek Christmas

Christmas is coming early to Owl Creek as the Owl Creek Reservoir Commission presents its free Owl Creek Christmas with Santa on Dec. 11-12. The event will be open each day from noon to 4 p.m. and will feature free drawings for toys, bikes, hams and turkeys. There will also be a campfire for roasting marshmallows, pictures with Santa and crafts for the kids to make.

All events will be held at the Lower Reservoir. Food and beverages will be available.

Rain dates will be Dec. 18-19, same time.

Holiday music

The Tamaqua Area High School Music Department will present its' annual holiday music concert Thursday in the school auditorium. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. with the program set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

First gift

New Life Assembly of God Church will again sponsor a "First Gift" campaign to provide local children with a brighter holiday during difficult economic times. Organizers are currently accepting donations from area merchants, businesses and generous citizens.

The program will be held Dec. 10 at the church. Each child will receive gift bags filled with toys, candy and other donated items. There will also be cookies and hot chocolate available.

Writers' workshop

The Black Diamond Writers' Network and the Pennsylvania Women's Press Association will combine forces to sponsor a workshop on visioning and setting goals. The workshop will be held Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Tamaqua Public Library. Guest speaker will be Cathy Colangelo, a life enhancement and career coach based in Weatherly.

Adult day care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for December, including a visit from St. Jerome's kindergarten students on Dec. 21.

Other activities planned for the month include: Dec. 6, bingo; Dec. 8, craft day; Dec. 13, Christmas music with Andrew Roblin; Dec. 15, Salvation Army visit; Dec. 17, cooking class; Dec. 20, sing-a-long with Audrey Christ; Dec. 21, flannel shirt day; Dec. 22, foot doctor visit; Dec. 27, visit with Skye the Therapy Dog; Dec. 28, monthly birthday party; Dec. 30, New Year's party.

Advent Noontime Services will again be held in Tamaqua leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The annual community events are held at different locations each week. This years's schedule will include: Dec. 1, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pine and Mauch Chunk Streets; Dec. 8, St John United Church of Christ, Pine and Biddle Streets; Dec. 15, New Life Assembly of God, Schuylkill Avenue.

The public is welcome to attend. a light luncheon will be served following each noontime service.

Weekly street sweeping operations in the Borough of Tamaqua have been discontinued for the Winter months. Street sweeping will resume in the Spring of 2011, with schedules to be advertised in the TIMES NEWS.

ESRC basketball

The Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission is seeking volunteer coaches and referees for its Biddy Basketball Program for students in third through sixth grade. There will be two separate divisions, 3-4 grade and 5-6 grade. The program is scheduled to begin the second week in December and continue through February.

The league is designed to help children develop and sharpen their basketball skills, increasing their interest in the game. Games and practices will be held at the Tamaqua Elementary School and the West Penn Elementary School.

Thanksgiving

The Tamaqua Salvation Army is offering local residents the opportunity to share in the joys of Thanksgiving through a free Thanksgiving Day meal. Turkey and all the trimmings will be served tomorrow, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the SAL Center, 115 W. Broad St. Delivery options are available for the disabled and the elderly.
